45/410 questions
« on: December 11, 2005, 04:27:13 AM »
I have a few questions for the knowledgeable users of the contender 45/410 barrels.

I'm thinking of using the 410 portion of this barrel on rabbits.  Does anyone know what the effective range is for a 10" barrel?  Does it shoot 3" or the shorter shot shells?

Does the choke that comes with this barrel choke it down to a full setting?

Is shooting shot out of a rifled barrel hard on the rifleing?  I assume the barrel is rifled.

And for you Wisconsinites, I assume there are no problems using the 45/410 in Wisconsin to small game hunt.

Any comments are appreciated.  Thanks.

3 out of 4 ain't bad KC.  Thanks.
If I understand what you are saying, getting the smooth bore 410 barrel in lieu of the 45/410 wouldn't gain me much in effective range? I was considering that as an option as well.   I think the short pistol barrel would be more fun.

I'm not so sure the "choke" is a constriction pre se. The "choke has straight rifling in it to attempt to counteract the effects of regular rifling in the barrel on the shotcup.

I'm not sure about Wisconsin regulations but I believe federal regulations prohibit their use on MIGRATORY small game such as doves.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Which barrel length.

I'm not trying to beat this topic to death, but which barrel length would be best suited for hunting rabbits or maybe squirrels- 10, 12, or 14". The reason I ask is based on the theory that the rifling in the barrel will hold the pattern tighter than in a smoothbore which could impact the effective shooting range for the rabbit.  If the pattern is too tight, it'll be harder to hit the target and if you do hit, it becomes overkill.  Maybe a shorter barrel would be better for targets under say 30 yards?  The longer barrel would give a better site plane and probably more velocity and increase the kill range.  Any opinions on this one?
Or should I just forget the whole thing and go buy a chicken?

Just buying the chicken is easiest.

But mine shoots pretty good with 2 3/4 #6 Winchesters that I had around.  I patterned it at 25 yards and #6's seemed respectible.  #9's were not so good.  Those were all I had to try.

Just got mine used a few months ago.

The rifling will open the pattern not make it tighter that is why T/C ships the barrels with the "choke" that will stop the spin.

I have a 10 inch barrel for my contender and I love it very fast to bring up and point, when I got my encore I barrowed a 15 inch barrel and it was not so handy in the field. I am now looking for a 12" for my encore but will not turn down the 15" I just will not be as happy.

Thanks Ricky.  I thought the spin tighened the group, but now that you mention it, I guess it makes sense that it would open it faster.  Sounds like a 12" would get the better of both worlds.

Dakotashooter2, I took my 14" bbl. gun to the local Fla. game office, told them(law enforcement) that I wanted to shoot ducks- they said it was perfectly legal as long as I used the proper shot type(not lead).  Pat
