Probably also too close, but here is another image for the project.

I scarfed this one from Cannon-Mania's website:

Here are some numbers on mine:

Diameter at muzzle: 4.35”

Diameter at widest point: 4.6”

Trunnion diameter: 1.75”

Diameter at breech end: 3.5”

Distance from muzzle to trunnion: 5.25"

Distance from rear of barrel to trunnion: 8.625"

Width of straight barrel section behind trunnions: 3.25"

OAL: 15.625"

I took these pictures this morning using 3x zoom.

Thanks, but same issue.  Good looking cannon - that's the intrigue!

Here's what I do:

step one is to insert the jpg into AutoCAD, this one from one of the links I posted above.

Step two is to trace around the edges - that's where the distortion causes problems.  You'll see two pairs of construction lines in red at the bottom - both go through the same features, just in different places.  They would line up if the picture was taken from a great distance away.

Step three is to take the trace of one side and mirror it to a complete shape, separate the trunnions, rotate both around their respective axes and that produces the 3D solid.

Step four would be to take an known dimension and scale the solid to that size (or what ever scale size is wanted).

Step five would be to slice sections out and dimension them for the production drawings.

(Wes - looking forward to see if the pix works)

JOHN  -  EXCELLENT!

The pix will do well, with only a little distortion.  From the camera position being aligned with the top half, that will be more accurate than the slight distortion on the bottom half.

Providing all the dimensions will provide a good reference as well.

With all the dimensions above, I'll scale the inserted drawing to the reference dimensions and work from there.

Tune in tonight.

Thanks!

Your right about them being easy to move. Two of us can lift it into the bed of a pickup. On level ground my 9 year old son can wheel it from place to place. She's a handy little piece.

Ok, here's the rendering:

Section is next, with dimensions (full scale).

Since there was a bit of distortion (normal for a picture unless one uses a planar field of focus lense) the dimensions should be considered approximate.

Take these with a LARGE grain of salt:

It's about the best I can do from a photo.  If any of y'all with one of these want to red-line a print I'll send one (or more) for corrections.

Thanks, Wes, but this is just a start.

If one were to sit down with calipers and a set of radius gages it could become something much more accurate.

Need bore dimensions and need to add the trunions.

Tune in tomorrow.

CW my money says the originals weren't made to as great a degree of accuracy as your drawings are even now interpolating from a picture...

I think I see the beginings of my next project. I'm leaning towards steel mainly because of cost Bronze would be way too expensive and the trunnons would be harder to attach. I can just weld the trunnions on a steel tube

I agree that 4 decimal place accuracy is excessive; that's the default for AutoCAD.

I'm working on a version with standard (nominal) values for radii and feature sizes.  It'll take another day or so.  When done it'll be easy to scale.  Also ensuring that if the drawing is used for casting that the draft angles are in the right direction.

Hello, Don Lutz contacted me from AOP and sasid that he found a drawing for the tube and some stuff on the carriage. Don told me that the drawings were incompleate though. He is sending them to me. Maybe they will shed some light on a shady area? I'll keep everyone filled in.

Here's a picture of one that's been done up in high relief and engraving:

That is beautiful work!

But is it a mortar or is it a howitzer? Looks kind of long compared to the Coehorn mortar.

Cat, did you get the print you were working on finished yet? The last one you sent you said to hold off on.

It shaped like a medieval culverm that has had trunnions added to it. Its what I consider a transitional piece.

Here's a 'rendering' of the latest.

Need to do some serious scaling and checking of actual dimensions and details next.  This is from the picture of the original.  Obviously when you get into the fine detail there are some features that are tough to make out.

Of course, and if you want your personal set of plans to be in fractions, it's a few keystrokes away.  That way you can have the fun of converting all the sixteenths, quarters, eighths etc. to decimal fractions to adjust the controls on the lathe.

With this project, there is interest on Wes's part as well as my own, to histerical accuracy.  There are two models of this cannon, and originals and copies.

We would like to have a handful of the dimensions taken from an ORIGINAL D.King cannon.

a) Does anyone know of one in a nearby collection or museum?

b) Would someone be able to take a drawing (provided on paper or electronically) and measuring instruments to actually measure an original cannon?

This is a plea for help, your assistance is solicited.
