My White Buck

I've never been able to close out a big buck kill. But that changed today! As some of you know I started my own Survey Company this year. One of the best things I've ever done. Business has been good. This month has been slow but Thursday the phone started ringing. Darn! The weather has not been good for hunting all month, but Saturday, being today, was going to be the day to hunt. My wife wanted to work today, but I was going to the camp no matter what. I just had that feeling. My hunting buddy Bill was under the weather so I had the run of the grounds. That was a no brainer. The South Pipeline stand I've been letting Bill hunt all year. That's the same stand some of you have seen in past pictures. I started getting ready last night, and I went to a web site where you could listen to deer calls.

http://www.bowsite.com/bowsite/features/practical_bowhunter/deergrunting/deergrunt.html

I got the game plan down with the calls, loaded up and was ready to hit the road in the morn. I skipped the biscuit run this morning. After you nice DWB's look at the pictures of me, you'll see I don't need any biscuits. So I made a sandwish for the ride. Nice dark ride with no traffic to the camp. I got to the stand just at first light. I capped the Super 91, poured a cup of coffee, and got my calls ready. I started calling as the web site instructed, about every 12 to 18 minutes. At 7:30 an old gray-haired doe crossed under the Cedar scrape tree and raised up to nip a limb. She needed killing due to her age, but she was not in the book today. At 8:00 I stopped calling, feeling like a fool. I've been suckered agin with cheap tricks. Oh me! At 8:40 a young buck came on the the pipeline 250 yards South of me. WHUT! A second buck follows behind him. HELL! They are looking up the pipeline toward me! I start glassing them and make up my mind on the second buck being he was bigger and had a better rack. I crank the scope to 9x as they walk through a barbwire fence like it was not even there. They close to 200 yards, steady closing toward me! They got to 175 yards and started stretching their necks high like they were looking at something below me! I get off the scope to see what the heck they were trying to see. OH MY GOD! 25 yards down on the South top bank of the ditch is the big boy they didn't want any part of! He was moving at a quick pace looking for the DOE calling for him. I went reflexed on 9x and all because I couldn't let this big boy get away from me. KABOOM! I knew I rocked him but got ready to follow up. Out the stand, across the ditch, there's the blood trail.

Glancing at the blood trail through the woods I see him 10 yards away piled up.

Whoa! I finally did it. As I was looking at the buck, I was thinking about each and every part of the hunt from last night studying the type of calls to the kill. This was not my best shot. That 150 yard shot I was going to take would have been something more to brag about. But I called this buck and his buddies in looking for a doe in heat. Switching from a 150 yard shot to a 25 yarder with the buck stepping at a good pace almost making it to safety in the woods was quite a feat to pull off.

I think this is what you have been waiting for.

Check out my little Bud carefully studying the BigBoy in the last pic.
