Ruger Red Label Ejectors
« on: December 12, 2005, 03:14:51 AM »
This past weekend, I purchased a well cared for Ruger Red Label 12 gauge.  I took it out yesterday, and shot a few shells through it just to make sure it would go "bang".  After firing, when I broke open the action, the lower empty shell case shot right out of the chamber like it should.  The upper barrel did not.  The ejector only forced it up an inch or so.  Is this a major concern, or a mere nuisance?  What can I do to fix it?  Should it be reffered to a gunsmith.  I must confess that the loads were some cheap Winchester Dove Loads.  Thanks!

Sounds like you may have some crud or fouling onder the ejector slide. If your using some of the bargin basement ammo that could be the problem. I had some estate .410's that the ejectors will only kick about halfway out. But they work fine with AA's & STS's. I think the chambers are hard chromed so roughness there is unlikely. Try a box of AA's or STS"s you may not have a problem.

If the shell's an inch or so up then it's likely the ejector has fired. something kept the hull from exiting.. Either a rough chamber or a weak ejector. Try dry firing the that barrel and watch the ejector. Does it snap up and is it solid when raised? Takedown the gun and check to be certain the ejector springs are ok and in place. I'd bet on a dirty/rough chamber. Still check the ejectors by dry firing and compare the results.  I've attached a diagram link below.

Thanks folks.  I took it down last night, cleaned it all up, including the barrels.  I was surpired at the amount of crud that I got out.  Lightly oiled everything.  Will try it this evenig after work.  Dont you hate how your job gets in the way of the important stuff??  Take care, and Happy Holidays!

I retired in January 2002 and still am amazed that I ever found the time to go to work!
