Who got skunked?
« on: December 12, 2005, 06:08:55 PM »
Well guys...during the deer season I saw a family of four twice and a group of six deer, all with no shots. I'm up in Susquehanna county and I got the deer hunter blues. Of course there's still the late season, so I can keep my fingers crossed.

Anybody else got the blues?  :(

You are not alone, nut in Johnstown Area, Cambria county.  5 to 6 people hunting, got 2 deer saw 4 total.  This system DOES NOT WORK PERIOD.  PGC has been bought off andthey lie like dogs on a clean warm carpet.  No you are not alone.

No good here in McKean Co either.....saw 5 deer during the week I could get out, all doe ( and No I wont shoot one! ) Not even sure I'll buy a liscense next year, I'm tired of supporting the PGC and their flawed game management ideas........Yeah, its working....in favor of the timber and insurance companies.
And just for the record, I really dont care if I evere shoot another deer, but I sure would like to see some!!!!

Monday....passed on 6 antlerless, no shot on 2
Tuesday....did not hunt
Wed..........saw 2 shot one button buck
Thursday.....spent day stamping through very thick briars on an oxbow.  kicked out some very big deer.  One I believe is a very large buck.  It was hunkered down at the very end of the oxbow in some very dense and tall (over 6ft)briars.
Friday.........passed on a small antlerless, saw 5 others.  possibley a buck nearby, could not make out rack, but acted like a buck.(slinking away with head held low.
Sat.........saw two large buck, one spike buck, four antlerless.  buddy took one..it was a small doe.

I hunted just east of Pittsburgh, near the westmoreland/indiana co. border.
Most hunters that I saw were stand hunting.  If the deer were not moving they were not going to see them.  3/4 of saturday's hunt were spent doing differnt drives.  this is when I saw the antlerless deer. The spike and one of the large bucks that i saw were observed in an area that had just been driven through about an hour before.  I happened to be stationed in an area where i could look back up into this wooded lot and saw the large one sneaking through.  the spike came out of the other end of it a moment later. (time and distance says that they were two seperate deer.)

Need to come up with a good plan for 'my' oxbow monster for next year.  I am sure he will still be there and will be even bigger.

I think this year it was feast or famine, the s..east and the s...west seem to see a lot of deer, but the big woods o f the northern tier the deer were few and far between which made a lot of very dissapointed hunters

I agree also, the deer are in the cities or just on the edge. I see many Deer in Washington County, but not as many as just 5-10 years ago, which I think there was one behind every tree. It use to be like that up in McKean County when I was young near Westline, but my brothers tell me no Deer now. Jack.

Skunked in McKean also, 18 yrs ago used to see 20 or 30 deer Opening day, last year saw biggest buck Ive shot up there on Wed, only deer I saw all week. I can live with the antler restriction, but the present doe season has gotta go in the northern units. This year coupla does, thats it. I'll probably stay close to home and bowhunt next year.
cnTndr85, where in Mckean are you hunting? Im right outside of Smethport.

Just outside of Smethport in the other direction, Ormsby, Cyclone, Gifford area.

Sorry you came all this way to get skunked but its as bad as I've ever seen it.....antler rest. are OK by me too, but there needs to be doe season restrictions as well!

PA is crying that they want more hunters (that means $$$) but if they dont have anything to hunt its gonna be a tough sell, especially to kids...I know for a fact if I was 12 year old and just starting to hunt I wouldnt be going back for a second season.

We are right past Irish Hollow road coming out of Smethport. They logged a lot of the mountain 3yrs ago, I thought that may help some but I haven't seen any improvement. It is tough to stay focused when you keep forgetting why your freezing out there your butt off.

Hunted my behind off.

Archery:  I hunted archery season over 50% of the days of the season.  Deer numbers weren't too bad here in Dauphin county (private ground), but not like they used to be.  Finally got a small 8-pointer during the last week (the only one that came into range-about 6 yards) under the tree.

Rifle Season:  I did not fire one shot from my rifle or pistol.  Passed a mother and offspring on the first day.  Saw nothing after that.

Muzzleloader (flintlock, late season):  First day, fired one shot, one kill on an island in the Susquehanna.  Happened to be a buck that had dropped its antlers.  I thought that it was just a big old doe.  Very close shot, about 6 yards again.  Guess I was just plain lucky.

Overall, I saw a lot less deer than usual, but I'm not too disgusted yet...
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

Hunting was good here in the northern half of Jefferson Co.  I saw 3 bucks on first day, the only day I went out.   ...which is 3 more then I normally see.

My uncle got one, I got one of the others.  I think a cousin and another uncle each got one on the other side of the farm.

I belong to a club in Carbon county, and on the first day this year, I saw two doe, PERIOD, and that was between 4:30 pm and the 4:36 pm closing time. Five years ago, at this same spot, I had 30+ doe at one time for nearly an hour. However, our club members did take 4 buck I know about, one a nice 8 point.

I did miss a doe in Tioga Co during muzzleloader season, but yes I had a pretty lousy season.
I'm looking forward to spring gobbler.

I only hunted one day near Kane and saw zero.  My buddy saw a fork and that was it.  Very little sign.  I doubt I'll buy another non-resident license for PA.  I didn't get a deer here in Ohio, but at least I saw some.
