Question about calibers?
« on: December 12, 2005, 06:27:34 PM »
:-)   Hi I am new to this site and have a question about caliber choices. I have a contender and shoot a few of the factory chamberings, 45-70, 7-30 waters ect. I have been thinking about getting a couple of custom shop barrels and I am wondering if anyone out here has used any custom contender barrels in 300 savage and 250 savage? I am wondering if these two calibers are any good accuracy wise and power wise in a 16" contender barrel. Thanks!

Question about calibers?

In my limited use of rimless cases in the Contender I have form the following opinions:
The Contender is much better suited to rimmed cases.
It takes a lot of careful work to get accuracy and case life out of rimless cases in Contenders.
If I can find a cartridge with simmilar potential in a rimmed cartridge I will go with it over any rimless. I have gone so far as to rechamber a 6mm TCU to a 6mm-30 (30-30 necked down - same shoulder angle) to get 3000 FPS with a 6mm in a contender.

Having expressed my opinion I know a few who really like their rimless cases in the Contender and have no problems with them at all. My choice would be to get a barrel in a chambering that could be switched to a rimless case if the need arose.

Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

I do not think that the Contender can be chambered for the two cartridges that you mentioned. The Contender is not made for the higher pressure cartridges, the Encore is. From the websites that I have visited I have not seen any custom barrel maker that will chamber the 300 + 250 Savage in a Contender. I could be wrong about this but I would assume a little research and phone calls could shed some light on this for you.

SSK has, Van Horn does,  I think GB had a 10" 300 sav. by SSK that was not pleasant in that short a barrel. SDhandgunner has had some good experience with a 250 sav that he had at one time, great accuracy. I've seen others post about their experiences with both in the Contender. I think if you do some research you'll be able to find some options if that's what you want. If you retitle your post specific to these rounds I think you'll get more feedback.

Good Luck.

I have a 30 Bower Alaskan.  Fireform from 307 or 356 winchester cases.  There is a gentleman that also makes calibers based off the 444 cases necked down.  These are all rimmed cases, and as Paul said, can be very accurate.  You do not have to load them to excessive pressures to make them good hunting barrels.  My 7x30 waters works just fine for deer.   My suggestion on customer calibers similar to the 300 and 250 savage would be the wildcat 7x39, 25x39 etc.  Check out the bullberry, EABrown, bellm, or sks sites for other calibers.

Yes I do happen to have a SSK 14" Stainless-Steel Contender Barre in .250 Savage. The .250 Savage is an interesting cartridge in the Contender, and is perfectly safe PROVIDED SAAMI Maximum Loads (45000 CUP) are not exceeded. What the problem is is that the .250 Savage Case Design and Case Capacity are capable of producing more Case Head Thrust than the Contender is capable of handling.

I have used (am using) 75gr. Hornady Hollow Points loaded to about 2900 FPS for Coyotes and Varmints. While this bullet / load shoots quite well, I think when this ammo is shot up I am going to try a 75gr. Hornady V-Max next time. I have taken a few Coyotes with the 75gr. Hornady Hollow Point and all were Bang / Flop kills. I also took a large Badger this past fall with this bullet and it too was an instant kill. When I last was out shooting Prairie Dogs with this Bullet / Load I was a little disappointed in the bullet performance. YES all of the Prairie Dogs were killed instantly, but I guess I was expecting more dramatic results in terms of air time.

For Whitetails I have used the 100gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip with quite good results. I just recently worked up a new load for the 100gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip using H-4895. Accuracy is quite good (sub 1" 5 shot 100 yard groups) at an average muzzle velocity of 2558 FPS. I had recently used H-322, but H-4895 provides me with as good or slightly better accuracy, at about the same velocity with what appears to be less pressure.

I think in the Contender if a person wants ONE BARREL / CALIBER to use on both Varmints, Coyotes and Deer in a Factory Cartridge (ie not a wildcat) the .250 Savage makes a good choice. For the record while I have not shot any game with them, I have shot a few boxes of Remington Factory Ammo (100gr. Pointed Soft Point). Accuracy is from 1 to 1 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yards and the average velocity is 2400 FPS.

While I dreamed of a 14" .300 Savage Contender for years I never have had one. Performance in a 14" Barrel is about on par with what can be achieved with the .30-30 Ackley Improved from what I have read over the years. Some claim that the .300 Savage suffers from extraction problems when max loads are reached in the Contender. I guess it all depends on how you look at it, one train of thought would be that that would be a safety / perssure indicator rather than a hinderance. However without actually having owned and or shot a .300 Savage I am just speculating.

As per the Rimless Cartridges in a Contender, I have shot many over the years and with proper case care, and loading I have never had any problems.

Good luck with your quest.

I currently have and shoot a custom barrel in 300 savage. The contender will not handle factory loads due to the head size, but I do get over 2500fps with 130 gr. bullets and when doing my part, groups under 3/4-inch at 100yds.

Mine is a 15" tapered barrel and is not bad at all to shoot.
