How's it going so far?
« on: December 13, 2005, 03:06:05 AM »
How is everyone doing so far this whitetail season?   For me, I hate to admit to missing a large buck that appeared in front of me after I ahd quit hunting early in the season.  I have bagged a large bodied cull buck 3 pt, and filled an anterless tag.  My wife took a couple of turkeys so far.   How about the rest of ya?

I'm having my best season ever. Actually it's my first season for whitetail. I've taken two bucks. The details are posted in the Deer Hunting thread.

We've had our best season ever in the Texas Panhandle.  A 22 1/2" 9 pt that grossed 148", field dressed 192 lbs, a 17" 12 Pt that grossed 164" and dressed 160 lbs, and I got lucky with a 19" 11 pt that grossed 158" and field dressed 180 Lbs.  Two straight years of alot of moisture really helped.  I love the Panhandle!

Our best year so far, but following Grubb's act is tough!
3 of us on the lease.    My wife took a 160 lb dressed ten point that is rough scored mid 140's.   My partner took a 7 x 6 with two additional brow points that scored approx 145 and weighed 146.  The third fellow has passed several nice ones waiting on a 150+.
We have managed this tiny place carefully for 13 years and saw more bucks this year than ever.   In spite of a terrible drought during the antler growing season.

Well now, I didn't go hunting but I went looking Tuesday. My brother in law has 160 acres out of Coleman.
He has invited me up a couple of times and nothing ever seemed to work out right. Last week, 12-6-05 for the records since GB keeps em fer a while, I was up at Dawson Precision getting my 9x23 pistola and Jim mentioned that he had the camper up at the place and did I want to come up before he brought it home?
I made a commitment for 12-13-05, without checking with the Hen. Boys I am telling you that I am getting bold in my old age. Anywho, said I would be up and we could spend a couple of days out there.
I did not buy a lic. or take a gun. I don't have a rifle anymore, sold it when I decided that the cost too hunt was more than I wanted to spend. That was more than a few years ago.
Got up Tuesday AM and we set about going up. Splendid weather for traveling, and the scenery was a relief for these old eyes. I love that country up there but am ashamed too admit that I could not live up/out there. Just too cold and dry fer me, for a long stretch anyway.
We knew going in that the weather was wrong; warm, 30 mph wind, full moon, the god of hunting was working against us.
Got in the stand about 4PM. lordy boys, that was a wonderful 3 1/2 hours. Jim saw a spike that he will wait til spike season to harvest, I saw nothing but was content as could be.
Saw all the real cowboys there in Coleman, you know, the real deal, tha boys that work the ranches out there. I missed seeing 'em more than I would have remembered or thought.
Went to Hall's Processing Wednesday AM to pick up Jim's sons deer for him. The guy at the locker plant said the deer this year were much bigger bodied deer than in the past, that he could remember. The largest he had in the plant this year was a 12 point that was 195 lbs field dressed when it came in. Boys that is bigger than a South Texas buck. It came in from the north part of the county.
Golly dang, I had a good time. The rains came it Wednesday and we packed it in an came back to Salado.
I had a world of fun.
Blessings

:D williamlayton.  Coleman county has some very good deer, and plenty of em.  I fish Lake Coleman and several tanks around Coleman quite often.  I always see a bunch of deer driving in about daylight. Good luck on your hunt there.

I hunt Taylor county, have seen lots of deer this year, but have not killed one yet.  I seen a big 12 point opening week-end, that has caused me to pass up several respectable bucks. I plan to take "something" this week-end, gotta have some for chicken fry and to make a few pounds of sausage.  For eating there is nothing better than a young doe..............
