Author Topic: ANYONE MOLDING AND LOADING SABOT SLUGS? (Read 1315 times)

just wondering if anyone here does this?i have been thinking about getting a Lee slug mold.thet make it in two sizes with the biggest one weighing in at 1 oz.Lee claims good accuracy and this slug can bet shot from a rifled barrel.the slug is loaded into a shotcup and that is the sabot.the shotcup grips the rifling.this should be a great way to produce some good cheap sabot slugs for shooting at the range and into deer.

info needed from those who have tried it

I've been casting slugs for about 15 years. Tried the Lee slug a few years ago and never got it to shoot well. The best I have found and the one I still use is the Lyman slug, looks like a huge air rifle pellet. I cast mine using straight wheel weights, would rather have complete penetration than expansion. Loads just like the Lee slug, drop it in a shot cup and fold crimp. Load info is in the Lyman shot shell reloading book. I get 3" groups at 100 yds out of the two slug guns I shoot it in, a mossberg 695 and a NEF Tracker II.

i will check that one out for sure.how fast do you push them or should i say how fast can you push them?

ive got a 20ga ultraslug and a 12ga tracker II.my son is now hunting with the 20ga ultraslug and i thought i might play around with the tracker II some.had my smith mount a scope on the barrel for me so thats all taken care of.just thought i would try to get away from the $2.00 a pop deal with the factory offerings.i could live with 2 to 3 inch groups at 100yds with my own home rolled ammo.

anything else i need to know such as brand of empty shells,shot cups and that kind of thing.best brands to use?Remington or Winchester?

I do the same as 50calshtr. Straight wheel weights, yellow AA wad, 45 gr Blue dot, and rifled choke tubed barrel. I found they dont work too well in fully rifled barrels because the rifling rips the wad up while the rifled choke tube seems to work well. Also the hulls you load them in can make a difference in accruacy. Some of the hulls have a different ID as you can tell when you seat the slug. Some almost drop in, and some seat fairly hard. I found the cheapo Remington Black Mohawk hulls give me the best accruacy. BTW I would have to take the rest of the day off If I shot one of those in a single shot gun. I only shoot them in my 11-87 as the recoil can be quite stiff in anything but a gas gun. They are devastating on deer.

Jeff,
Check out the Lyman loading manual for shot shells, gives several loads for a number of hulls. I use Federal 3" and Blue Dot powder and getting 1300 plus FPS. Plateshooter is right, they do kick out of the Tracker but cut cloverleafs at 60 yds on a target and I'll garuntee you'll only need one on a deer.

the Tracker IIs do have some recoil i know but i like the single shots and will take the hit.i see the Lyman mold costs alittle more than the Lee mold but it wouldnt take long for it to pay for itself.when i sighted in the scope on this barrel it didnt take long to burn up $40.00 worth of ammo.the 1900fps Winchester slugs shoot very good out of this barrel but the recoil is very stiff.i wouldnt think the hand loaded Lyman slug would kick any more than the 1900fps whichester slug.i think im going to try this slug loading out
