On the last day of deer rifle season I had the chance to take a doe.
My buddy and I were glassing a clear cut he had taken a doe earlier that afternoon. We spotted a group of does moving away from us well out of handgun range. My bud handed me his 223 rifle, and I took the largest doe she dropped dead at the shot. Or so I thought....
I walk down to where she had fell. She jumped up and ran out into the cut, and laid down again. I got close and aimed for her head. She should have been dead right? I walked up behind her poked her with rifle. she jumped up and kicked the snot out me. Knocking me down then took off. There I am setting on my butt unloading the rifle at her. Miss Miss Miss Click. By now the commotion had drawn a crowd of my best friends, who are almost rolling on the ground laughing.
Just then the doe collapsed into a wash about 12' deep and about 3' wide at the bottom. We all walked down to take a look, there she lay still. So we gave her a minute or two. Then I slid down the wash to retrieve her.
I grabbed her ear and reached for my knife. Thats when it got bad she got up and started kicking and pawing me. I clawed for my pistol and dropped it when she landed a good hit to my stomach. So I jumped on her trying to pin her down rassling around her kicking me and me punching her. And all my dearest friends rolling and cheering the deer.
Finally I punched her in the head and it stunned her long enough for me to find my knife and slit her throat. She exspired quickly after that. There I sat covered in blood, hers and mine out of breath and worn out.
Looking up at budds who are still howling and making colorful commentary. :-D
I said Ya'll could have helped. To which one said We didn't think she needed any help and we were surprised when she lost. And another said he wouldn't help me cause I had cost him 20 bucks on the fight.
Thats why I love them guys so much they are so caring. :?

While I really do enjoy a good fight it could have been much worse. Especially if you had a young Son, Niece or Nephew along with you.
Always make sure to approach a downed animal from the Side with your firearm in the Ready position.
Get a good look at the eyes. They will glaze quickly if the animal has expired. Again, it could have been much worse and the perpatrator is usually not the victim. :?

mistake #1 - using a 223

mistake #2 - assuming the deer was dead.

mistake #3 - walking up and polking it with the rifle without being ready to put another round into it.

At some point in this thing I hope you learned that a deer and a grounghog are two very diffrent animals .

The gun that works well for one may NOT be the best choice for the other . :?

I have to agree with you buzztail. That story isn't a confidence builder.

I would have to say that it might be better to shoot it with a digital camera if you don't intend on killing the deer. I wouldn't use a 223 to shoot paper plates.

:roll: I just have to keep saying it over, and over.............IN MY OPINION the .22 class bullet is not intended for deer sized animals. Tons of deer have been lost here in West Texas with the little guns, not because they won't kill deer class animals, but because the average hunter that arms themselves with the little gun does not have the experience to use it effectively. Seems like every father wants a .222 or .223 for their sons first deer gun....what a waste. JMHO. :roll:

Virginia requires .24 caliber or larger for deer.

Sorry you had so much trouble.

Once came upon a fellow who found a deer staggering on the road after being hit by car. He put it out of its misery with his knife, as you did. After securing the proper paperwork from the local gendarmes to permit the fellow to have the dead deer, it went into his trunk. Never thought I'd see that...deer stuffed into truck of economy car.

(Here in the commonwealth of Virginia the commonwealth owns the deer, and the representatives of the commonwealth (the police) have to release the deer to an individual in these situations.)

Hey MS, he was open and candid about the whole thing. I'd bet my next paycheck there are a few folks here who've wounded animals and let'm slip away but won't admit it. As for shooting deer with a .223 it'd not be my first choice but a well placed shot should take one down, they're not hard to kill.

Dusty it's one thing to go out with a deer rifle and things go wrong but a 223 your setting your self up for a bad day. Just think about it this way if you were going to kill your self. Would you shoot your self in the head for a fast death. Or in the foot to bleed to death. It's all common sense. Him admitting to this poor judgement doesn't make it better and for your paycheck. If you ask every one here if they lost a deer before they would say yes. Because it happens to every one. But your next question would be what caliber were you hunting with. 99% would say caliber for big game. Your logic makes no sense. And for a well place shot with a 223 ask hooker where the first shot was or the deer.:lol:

MS- your argument doesn't fly. If I was killing myself, both calibers will work equally well if I shoot myself in the head. Both calibers will work equally poorly if I shoot myself in the foot. :-D :-D
Sorry Charlie, but I live next to a state that allows 22 centerfires for deer. Most are taken with the 22-250 and then the 223. Alot of deer are taken, and we only know about the ones checked in, the rest are taken with a 22mag at night. That caliber crap doesn't flush, a good shot is a good shot on an animal and no one can ever say that if the animal was shot with a larger caliber in the same place that it would die any quicker.
Let me tell you, if I ever have the choice of some hillbilly shooting at me with a 22 that he is deadly with or a 300 mag that he is not, I know which I will pick!

The problem I find with you statement is, if I am accurate with a 22 I am accurate with a 300 win mag. I shoot all my guns accurate. I also think a .22 cal is not a good choice for deer. I am not saying they won't work, but just a bad choice. JMHO.

As bad of an idea as it is, the law permits centerfire .22 cals here in Kentucky. In fact the game laws say ANY centerfire cartridge is legal. (e.g. .32 ACP included) :evil:
