Got My Encore .500 S&W Barrel Today.
« on: December 15, 2005, 04:28:15 PM »
I ordered a .500 S&W barrel from a wholesaler that has a handful of 15" and 26" .500 S&W barrels for the encore.  The barrel has a muzzle Tamer.  Has anyone here shot a barrel with a muzzletamer?  How much recoil reduction can I expect?

Single_shooter_ND, Welcome to Graybeard. I have shot a lot of T/C Contenders handguns with muzzle Tamer's. It does help with the recoil and muzzle rise. But the 500 mag is going to be a handful no matter what you do. I don't have a 500 Mag for the Encore, but I do have a BFR and a S&W 500 Mag. After you shot it, please come back and tell us how it went.  :D

I have a bull barrel from Gary Reeder with one of his expansion chamber muzzle brakes.  It does a pretty good job, but the recoil (to me at least) is stiffer than my 454.  I am shooting 400 gr LBT Cast performance bullets and 38.5 gr of H4227.

I just shot my 416 GNR barrel this weekend and it (at least to me) has less felt recoil than the 500 SW  (the 416 is a 50 Alaskan case necked to 41 caliber.)

I wouldn't say the 500 is unpleasant to shoot it is just pretty stiff.  I wouldn't want to go out and shoot 100 rounds out of it in a session.  Mine is a 10inch barrel with a 2 inch brake for 12 inches overall.

I would like to know where you got your barrel. I am in the market for a big bore cartridge for my Encore and the 500 + 460 are at the top of my list. What are the prices like for the rifle length barrels?

I've got a 20", no muzzle break .500 made by OTT.  My best load to date is a 440 gr. Leadhead WFN cast bullet doing a chronographed 1650 fps.  That makes 2600+ foot pounds of energy.  Recoil is stout and feels no worse that the same Encore in 7mm or .300 magnum to me.  I use a shoulder recoil pad for bench work that takes all the pain out of the experience so I can shoot more.

Sorry it took so long to answer been real busy.  I have a wholesaler that has 40 barrels that are available.  They are stamped "FIRST PRODUCTION" on the side.  My number is 701-281-7000 ask for Shawn.  I'll be able to give more details as to how to get one.  I could Post a picture of the barrel if I can Figure it out.

Anyway Loaded some Starline Brass with 400 grain Sierra and it was pretty big bang and kick but not to bad.  Shot through 8" of tree and recovered the Bullet.  Weighed in at 394.2 grains.  Pretty impressive.

500 S&W Mag 15" Encore barrel
« Reply #9 on: January 14, 2006, 05:37:25 PM »
Hello guys,

I got one of these barrels in the 15" length and loaded the Honady brass with the 300 grain Speer bullets. The recoil is not bad at all. It recoils like my 475 GNR with Reeder's brake shooting 325 grain bullets. I also shot the Magtech 275 grain 500 S&W factory ammo. With the 300's 2" high at 100 the Magtech shot dead on at 250 yards. The Magtech ammo was like shooting 44 Mag without a break.
I took my largest Iowa buck to date on Dec 24th, 2005 with this hand barrel. Needless to say the deer did not go anywhere and the 300 grain bullet is out in the field somewhere.

Regards,
Justin Van Dee
