To my knowledge there has NEVER been found on the American continents (north or south) the bones of any creature that resembles gigantipithicus or "bigfoot". Be sure and let me know when it happens. I've studied human evolution a bit and the picture I get is that modern humnans evolved in Africa over a 100K years ago and that human precusers were African also. We are fairly certain that homo erectus reached Jave (Java man) but as for any LARGE bipeds reaching the Americas, there is no paleological evidence for that. Grab a copy of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution if you want something definitive on this subject (as definitive as we can get with the current state of our investigation into the subject).
Whereas I don't have the Cambridge Encyclopedia, I do have the "Encyclopedia of Human Evolution and Prehistory" published by Garland Publishing and Edited by, Eric Delson, Ian Tattersall, John A. VanCouvering, and Allison S. Brooks.
Personally, I think it is an interesting theory to say that 'Bigfoot' is (or has evolved from) Gigantopithecus, however it's a stretch. Gigantopithecus was contemporary with Homo Erectus and I see no evidence that he ever exsisted in such fashion with Homo Sapiens. Having said that..........
The location of the Gigantopithecus fossils are primarily in China, Vietnam, India and Pakistan. Over 1,000 fossils have been discovered and I see no listing of Africa as a fossil source. Therefore the History Channel Programs theory that the Gigantopithecus crossed over the land bridge from Russia to North America is at least geographically much more possible than if the fossils came from Africa. Does that mean I think it happened........ nope didn't say that...........
As far as for estimating body size..... certainly that can be done but only within a range, they do realistically believe them to be the largest Primate to ever walk the planet... But here is a quote "The body size of Gigantopithecus is nearly impossible to estimate realistically, as there are no weight-bearing bones known, and the animal might well have been macrodont (i.e. with teeth and jaws especially large for body size). " Remember that this animals teeth and jaws are MUCH larger than those of a gorilla.... so it's reasonably safe to place it's lower size range at that of a modern gorilla..........
Do I believe in Bigfoot.......... nope didn't say that......... but I do know a few folks who claim to have seen one back in the late 70's..... do I believe them..... nope didn't say that either.........
would I believe 'coffee shop' talk about Bigfoot....... nope I won't..... the burden of proof is MUCH GREATER than that!
