There was a heck of a program on the History channel last night about the prehistoric ape of this thread title.  What made it good was the connection made by scientists and others to a possible present day American great ape.  I'm sure it will be on again, it's the History Chanel.

I saw that. That thing was BIGGER than a bigfoot. They said they were up to 12 feet tall!!! Of course they reached that conclusion with nothing more than some teeth and a couple of jaw bones. Since apparently porcupines ate the rest of the skeletons. Maybe they'll find a full one sometime though.

I saw it also, and it was very profesionaly done. The thing I like the most was that they finally treated the subject with dignity, and not a joke, like they usually do.
The comparison between these giants and todays bigfoot is very good because they had some very credible sightins from the witnesses on the program. This Jeff meldrum? I think was his name is a very competent scientis to compare the two, and also gave some professional insight to both species. I thought the show was very well done. and hope they have many more like them.

I saw it as well and was very impressed with the professionalism that they showed on the subject.  I will have to watch it again because I nodded off right toward the end.

Why do you say it is Bigger then a Bigfoot ? Bigfoot reports have listed everything between 5 feet and 14 feet in them. The most common heights are between 8 feet and 10 feet. But many have been reported over 10 feet and even over 12 feet tall.

All the reports i'd ever heard had them at 8-10 feet tall. Of course since all they have of gigantopithicus are some teeth and jaws i don't see how they know it was 14 feet tall.

they use mathematics and ratios, from what i understand. they figure how long a human jawbone is in relation to its height and then use other primates for a comparison.

as for walking upright, i dunno....?

Pretty broad statement---dont you think?---I have seen the same thing as you probably have, in Africa, and they were 7ft tall  I have seen smaller heads of the Africans, and they were 7ft tall as well.

better than yours attitude?LOL my "attitude" is that I dont believe anyone with any number of certificates of learning on the wall can accuratly determine the height and stature of an ape from an ancient piece of a jaw bone, and I definetly dont believe thier hypothesis, thats what it is,an educated guess, lends any evidence towards the existance of "bigfoot" now or at any time in history.

To my knowledge there has NEVER been found on the American continents (north or south) the bones of any creature that resembles gigantipithicus or "bigfoot".  Be sure and let me know when it happens.  I've studied human evolution a bit and the picture I get is that modern humnans evolved in Africa over a 100K years ago and that human precusers were African also.  We are fairly certain that homo erectus reached Jave (Java man) but as for any LARGE bipeds reaching the Americas, there is no paleological  evidence for that.  Grab a copy of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution if you want something definitive on this subject (as definitive as we can get with the current state of our investigation into the subject).

Auctually there has been Dusty, read my entry to D MANN on 12/13/05 in the (any new bigfoot news) thread. I talked about a farmer that found a skull, and the game ranger took it away from him.

lol a coffe shop full of people that overheard a conversation does not document the fact that this man found the skull of an unknown primate or the ensuing conspiracy with the US govt.

I'm always amazed at how little most people know about the DISCIPLINE of science and just how demanding the criteria for a new find really are.  This is ESPECIALLY true in the field of paleoentology after the Piltdown hoax.  Anybody in the field today who claims to have a new find is subjected to INTENSE peer review.  Somehow the "coffee shop test" just does not look like it'll stand up to close scrutiny!!

Whereas I don't have the Cambridge Encyclopedia, I do have the "Encyclopedia of Human Evolution and Prehistory" published by Garland Publishing and Edited by, Eric Delson, Ian Tattersall, John A. VanCouvering, and Allison S. Brooks.

Personally, I think it is an interesting theory to say that 'Bigfoot' is (or has evolved from) Gigantopithecus, however it's a stretch.  Gigantopithecus was contemporary with Homo Erectus and I see no evidence that he ever exsisted in such fashion with Homo Sapiens.  Having said that..........

The location of the Gigantopithecus fossils are primarily in China, Vietnam, India and Pakistan.  Over 1,000 fossils have been discovered and I see no listing of Africa as a fossil source.  Therefore the History Channel Programs theory that the Gigantopithecus crossed over the land bridge from Russia to North America is at least geographically much more possible than if the fossils came from Africa.  Does that mean I think it happened........ nope didn't say that...........

As far as for estimating body size..... certainly that can be done but only within a range, they do realistically believe them to be the largest Primate to ever walk the planet...  But here is a quote "The body size of Gigantopithecus is nearly impossible to estimate realistically, as there are no weight-bearing bones known, and the animal might well have been macrodont (i.e. with teeth and jaws especially large for body size). "  Remember that this animals teeth and jaws are MUCH larger than those of a gorilla.... so it's reasonably safe to place it's lower size range at that of a modern gorilla..........

Do I believe in Bigfoot.......... nope didn't say that......... but I do know a few folks who claim to have seen one back in the late 70's..... do I believe them..... nope didn't say that either......... :)   would I believe 'coffee shop' talk about Bigfoot....... nope I won't..... the burden of proof is MUCH GREATER than that!

Its funny how those who believe in a mystical humanlike animal that has never been captured can poke fun at those who dont believe and whine about skeptics but when a non believer joins the discusion suddenly its a big deal,if you are so secure in your belief my non belief shouldnt cause you any insecurity, i enjoy your storys and arguments, they are very entertaining, cant I add my 2 cents without u getting your panties in a bunch?
