Best goose load?
« on: December 16, 2005, 12:02:21 PM »
Got an invite for a goose hunt on Maryland's Eastern Shore.  Haven't been waterfowl hunting in almost 10 years.  Used to use lead #2, then steel BB's (as the law required non-toxic), then bismuth.

What's the 'best' load these days - for geese over decoys from a pit blind?  I only have a 2 3/4" gun with mod choke. I've heard a lot about #2 or #4 Hevi-shot loads.

#2 Hevi Shot is really devastating on geese. Price is the only negative to using Hevi Shot. When I feel like saving some bucks my favorite steel load is BBB. Good luck and give us a report after your hunt.

Go with Hevi-Shot #2, you won't be disappointed.

Just a suggestion, try to borrow a 3" gun.  The extra "oomph" helps when hunting high flying geese.  The 2.75 will drop geese all day long, but I use a 3 1/2 10 gauge and have grown to appreciate the extra load.

I shoot 10ga 3 1/2" BBB.  I've also shot 3" 12ga BBB.  If you're stuck with 2 3/4" i guess i'd go with hevishot 2s or 1s.  If you're shooting decoying geese just remember to shoot at the head and you'll be fine.  If you're pass shooting it's going to be tough.

Since your goose hunting spend the extra bucks for the heavi shot type loads.  Unlike duck hunting you probably won't shoot 1-2+ boxes of shells.

Turns out it didn't make much difference. We hunted today near Chestertown, MD in Kent Co. Had a super guide.  Great decoys, good flagging, and calling.  My son ended up using my brother's 'extra' 11-87 3" because our 2 3/4" shell supply was restricted.  Anyway, we limited out before 0930.  All shooting under 40yds as they came sailing in, some much closer.  Great day!
