Used Smith and Wesson 9 MM Semi-auto?
« on: December 16, 2005, 02:16:00 PM »
Hello.

I currently shoot a .45 1911. I'm thinking of adding a 9 mm. The local gun store has a S&W semi-auto in stainless. I forget the model number. It's used. I believe it had fixed sights and black rubber or plastic grips. Overall it appeared to be in well used but very well cared for condition. Asking price is $ 225.00.

What do you think? Are S&W semi-autos decent to begin with? I've never bought a used semi-auto. Do you think there is some life left in this one if it is well cared for as it appears to be? Am I better served by buying a new nine for about  $ 100.00 more? It seems in my area the prices in nines are dropping both new and used. There are a lot of them around. The cheap ammo prices are what interests me in adding a nine to my collection.

Thanks!

If funds were available, I wouldn't hesitate buying a second generation S&W autoloader and I would jump at the chance to buy a third generation model. I would, however, stay away from their first generation models.

S&W semi autos are vastly underrated
I own several, and they are reliable and accurate

I have a S&W Model 6904 that I purchased off of a friend of mine for $200.  Sounds like that $225 price tag is just about right...My 6904 is a blued model that was manufactured around the early 90's...Still shoots great and it came with three high capacity mags(15).  None of that 10 shot crap...

Thanks guys.

I went back to the shop today and got more information. The pistol is a model 5906. I looked on a few auction sites and it appears used 5906's are selling well into the $300.00 - $ 400.00 range.

What can you tell me about this particular model? Is it current? Older? It seems like a great bargain at $ 225.00 yet it has been hanging around at this very busy store for a few weeks now.

Is there any quick and easy way to evaluate a used gun like this? If it's had 2000 - 3000 rounds through it that's one thing. 20,000 - 30,000 is quite another....

Sounds like a second generation Smith. The 5906s were actually pretty decent. The magazine disconnect is the only thing that I really don't like about them. For $220/225 it's probably a decent deal.

Third generation S&W auto -- the 5906 was the successor to the 659 (both models shown below) ...

... and the 659 was the successor to the 59, which, I do not own.

Yep, you're right Sir K!  Don't know how I forgot the 659. Never owned any of them, but carried and shot a few.

I have a 3913 S&W and I am very pleased with it. It is easy to conceal accurate and just feels good.

The S&W 9mm's were among the first US-made 9's, and perhaps the first of the double-stacks, after the Browning HiPower. In the early days, they were often compared to the 1911 .45, usually unfavorably; but bear in mind that was not too long after WWII and a lot of ex-GIs loved their 1911s (plus there was an active shooting sports competitive program that favored the .45).  Also, a lot of folks never liked the set-up and operation of the slide-mounted safety (even though that's now the way it is on the current GI-standard Beretta). I also think the S&Ws got a "bad rap", in general ... perhaps based on the earlier versions; but I think it was mostly a .45 vs 9mm thing (which obviously continues to this day).
That said, I've had 2 S&W 9's, a 469 and a 669.  Both were extremely well-made guns and functioned flawlessly for me.  I regret having since traded them (initially for a Colt Officers .45, which never worked well for me).
If you're used to the 1911, you may find the S&W safety a little hard to get used to; but I personally found it better for a carry gun (never was crazy about cocked-&-locked carry).  Bear in mind, also, there's now a heap of alternatives in the 9mm arena, with a variety of operating systems.  For the price you indicate, however, go with the S&W ... why not?

I bought a used police trade 5904 (alloy frame) last year from AIM Surplus. It is on of the most reliable autos I have ever owned, tied with my RIA  1911.
I prefer this Smith to anything else I have ever carried over 35 years of shooting. It feels right, the sights are great even for my old eyes (58 years) it has a very good trigger, similar to a DA revolver, takes the 59 series 15 to 17 round mags, and it has never failed to work.
It was $269, and my only regret is that I didn't buy 2.
