polaris starting problem

I have a 2003 polaris sportsmen 335 magnum,that is extremely or impossible to start in cold weather,anyone else have this problem or a solution for it . :oops:

Well it could be a couple of things...
The battery is old - Cheap fix
Does it start easy with the recoil?

You could have moisture in the starter  which slows the starter enough that it will not spin fast enough to generate the spark.

It may require some jetting.


Good luck, But start with the battery as it does not take much of a "loss of power" from the battery to do this.

rs - I bought a used 99 Sportsman 335 and it was hard to start in cold weather until I had it tuned up. Now it starts right up after sitting out all night in 0 to 5 degree weather. I just flip the choke on full and hit the starter. If it doesn't need a tune-up then I think Two Bears has it figured out right. Good luck! CEJ...

thanks for the replys ,it has a new battery,its kept inside cold but dry,the machine has less than 25 hrs on it ,i will check into the jetting aspect of it,when i asked the dealer about it i was told they are just cold hearted

Just a suggestion.  Don't know your starting procedure but try this.  Do not touch the throttle!  Get on the bike with it out of gear, hit the choke, then hit the starter but do not touch the throttle until after it starts and runs for a minute.  Most will fire right up and run this way but if you even think about touching the throttle you're out of luck.  Let us know what you find.

   tried starting with and without touching the throttle it doesnt seem to make any difference,but thanks for the sugestion.

When it gets cold out, the air gets thinner, which means the fuel mixture needs to be richened.  You might want to check into getting a larger pilot jet or starting jet.  Usually one size up will help or cure the problem.
