BOYCOTT CHAPTERS,INDIGO BOOKS, COLES.
« on: March 09, 2003, 06:06:33 AM »
Just to let all the hunters and shooters out there know, chapters and her companies indigo books and coles have decided to stop carrying any gun related books or magazines. they told me in an e-mail response that they were not selling, and that the decision was not "politically motivated". after doing some research, Heather Riesman, c.e.o. of chapters has been very involved in the gun control crusade here in canada. I would urge anyone who buys shooting and hunting books and magazines to find a bookstore who sells them and support them . And e-mail chapters and tell them what you thinkof their decision .

I've been boycotting them for the last few months, and I'm paying the price myself.  They seem to have the corner on the paperback market here in Ottawa, and I haven't been able to track some of the authors I read in the corner drug stores.

Does anyone in the Ottawa area know of a good book store that isn't Chapters, Smiths or Coles?

what about Mcnally-robinson's? these are about the same size as chapters and are spread all across the country.

Kevin, I spoke to mcnally robinson, and they told me they are in the business of selling books and magazines, not telling the public what they should or shouldn't buy.The exception is they pulled that auful book about carla homolka at the request of the girls's family's. In winnipeg, also try Dominion news and gifts on portage ave. great selection of hunting/shooting magazines.

This is kind of interesting because when I first read elsewhere that Chapters was pulling the gun related magazines,I went to our local store(Nanaimo) and I found no less than 8 different gun or hunting related magazines. There were a couple of hunting magazines,a few shooting mags and 1 or 2 Bowhunting magazines. Is this a cross Canada policy being made by them or is it done as a store by store decision?

David - Last time I was in West ED Mall they had Hunting magazines
but if you were looking for specific Gun mags or anything with
a picture of a gun on the front cover they were not to be found

This is a company wide edict from the owner herself.  you may find hunting magazines still, but you will not find guns and ammo, shooting times, handloader etc. If there are any on the shelf, they probably will be pulled when next month's mags are put on the shelf. Send chapters an e-mail, and see the reponse you get. They'll tell you that the gun magazines are not avail from their supplier (b.s. because I called them.), or that they were not selling and were dropped.

in theory if they have to remove all books and magazines that deal with a firearms related subject, you could also argue that they would have to remove any military history book that shows or mentions firearms. i'v also found that SIR has a good selection of magazines.

It is sad that we are at he mercy of large companies  that have control over the market.  It is profit that drives these companies and they don't give a dam about what you want.  They just replace the gun mags and put something there that sells.  If someone complains about gun mags ...which what probably happened...they just replace them with something else.  Just to appease the non shooting public!!!
Tomorrow is another day!
