'Yotes in the snow.

Ok, I am going to ask for some opinions, I trust you guys... :?

I want to use a 12 gauge pump on coyotes, I have 5 chokes.  Everything from skeet thru turkey. It's been a few years and  never had screw-in chokes before.  I figure if I get it rght for coyotes, foxes won't fall too far behind.  I am going to use my shotgun, my buddy is considering his .22 rimfire; I expect to be doubling his shots, for quick kills.  I want to use BB waterfowl 3" round, with a full or turkey choke. I haven't bought the ammo yet, so let me know, and I am not in the mood to take out a loan for Hevi-shot.....maybe for turkeys.   We call at night and with the moonlight and snow, it's a blast. Any pointers on the shotgun ammo and choke choices?

I would use the full choke if i used a shotgun at all. I would think it would depend on how brushy the country is and how close you get them in. Good luck............Joe............

If you hunt at night use a mouse or squeeker call, like a hurt rabbit. Full moon on new snow is ideal, however the coyotes know it too. They will be skittish. Use your tree stands that you used for deer. I use #3 buck out of a 20 ga when they get close. For day time hunting around here I invested in a range finder rather than a electronic call. You have to reach out and get them in the winter. A 22 hornet would be a mini for a bullet IMHO.

Don`t even thimk abt. useing a full choke tube if you useing water foul loads. Steel, or any shot legal for water foul is to hard to fire through a full choke tube. If your thinking of steel shot it`s no good on water foul let alone coyotes, it`s to lite. Something like Remington Heavy Shot in size B or larger would be excelant, but it cost abt. $2 a shot. I would recomand #4 lead buckshot through a mod. choke tube for best range.

I have a new Stoeger pump and I see now they warn against using anything tighter than a IC choke with steel...is that what you use with steel for ducks and geese? I never had screw in chokes before.

Can you choke the Hevi shot at all?  Maybe the Coyote load they have would be the way to go...

I read somewhere that hevi shot and tungsten/iron don't need to be run through as much choke due to less pellet damage. I would either use lead no 4 buck or one of the better no tox loads in goose sizes. You probably won't be shooting 100s of shells. good luck
