105 grain Speer in 243 on deer
« on: December 18, 2005, 03:41:01 PM »
I took a friend hunting yesterday and today. I load for his rifle and as he wanted the heaviest bullet available for his 243 I loaded him up some over 44 grains of IMR4831 (carefully worked up to in Winchester brass).  Well we saw at least 50 deer but the two he shot at were a small 8 point and a doe. The 8 point was running almost straight away and was hit a bit right of center Texas heart shot. Down he went no finisher needed.  This was his first deer so I gutted it for him. The bullet shattered the pelvic bone and blew green stuff up in front of the lungs in the chest. Ugly but effective.  20 minutes later he fills his doe tag with a neck shot that is a bit low. She drops spewing blood from a severed artery and the bullet left a 2 inch exit hole, finisher needed. Not pretty either.  I say he needs to work on his shooting but the bullet worked just fine. The powder charge in this load is above most manuals so start at 41.5 grains and work up.
