I just picked up a rifle tonight that would have to contend with that title. It is a sporterized 94 mauser in 6.5x55 made in 1900. The whole thing has been reworked, barrel turned down super thin, wood taken down with some woodwork done to pretty it up some, 20" barrel with thin porting. Must weigh around 5.5lbs. I can't think of a better eastern gun for deer/hogs. I picked this one up for my dad, he likes these sporterized mausers and this is easily the best one I have seen. Any decent 120-140gr bullet out of this would be dandy deer/hog load out to 200-250 yards. It has a 4x32 wide angle scope on it. With its short length and light weight it would be a dandy treestand gun.
Another rifle that you couldn't go wrong with would be a lever gun in 3030 or 45/70[/img]

Any good bolt action gun that you like in 308. Some people prefer Remingtons, some Browning, etc. but get the rifle in 308, short action and hard hitting.

cknight98 - I've got two favorites, a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 with the scout scope set-up and peep sights - great for heavy cover and fast shots. The 300 Sierra JHP makes them dead right there! Never had one go more than 10 feet and he was dead, just didn't know it yet. The other is a custom M700 Classic in .35 Whelen for the longer shots in open areas. That 225 gr Nosler Partition makes nice big holes! CEJ...

I think my ideal gun would be either a Remington Model 7 or Model 700 short action in stainless with a 20" or at most 21" barrel. I'd have it stocked full length Mannlicher style in the gray/black laminated wood. The slim contour barrel would be chambered to .358 Winchester. Can't think of a hog or deer hunting situation I'd be likely to find myself in it wouldn't be fine for. Of course I'd want one of the Sims Vibration Labs Pads on it.
I could do about as well in my cases with a Marlin 336 Lever gun chambered to .356 Winchester with SS metal and again a gray/black laminated stock and Sims pad.
Topped off with a low power variable scope they would be my version of ideal

I gotta go with my Encore in 7-08 with a Nikon Monarch 3-9X40. Has the Sims pad. Short, light, handy and loaded with a 160 Partition it will do whatever I want it to do.

Marlin 336 in .35 Remington......or Marlin 1895 in 45.70..........the 336 is a little more compact........

Thebear_78 - I like the way you think too... What's that old saying "Great minds think alike". My Marlin is set up just like yours except I went with the DRC loop lever and AO Sights. I like the stock on yours too - if the wood on mine wasn't so nice I'd have tried that too! My Ruger M77 RSM in 375 H&H is waiting on the side lines in case something bigger is needed. I almost always grab the .35 Whelen unless I'm hunting in a swamp or heavy cover. One of these days I may get up to your neck of the woods and I'll buy you a beer and swap ideas! CEJ...

I've never had the opportunity to hunt hogs, but I would think that the rifles I use for deer, moose and bear would do the job pretty well.
These are:
Savage 99 in .300 Sav. (.308 would be OK too).
BAR in .308.
Remington 760 carbine in 30-06.
Winchester 1895 in .303 British.
Winchester 94AE in .356 Win.
BLR in .358 Winchester.
Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen.

I could cut and paste Ricks response to give you mine, but of course I'd add the old 30-30, the 38-55, and the 88 Winchester to the lineup, just for arguement's sake.

I would say I have hunted with my Savage 99 300 the most for deer and pigs. But if I was limited to just one gun for all deer and hog hunting I would have to say a 12g shotgun. You can use every thing from slugs to buckshot. I have hunted some places that you can only shotgun hunt like in Indiana. Well you can use a Muzzle loader but no modern rifle. Also around here in the swamps of Florida a shotgun can come in real hand.
