Need opinions on throat measurement....
« on: March 09, 2003, 02:14:15 PM »
I just made a chamber casting of a T/C .44 Mag barrel I got recently. The chamber dimensions are fine but this barrel has 1/2" of freebore. I havent shot this barrel yet and was planning to handload for it. Im wondering with that much freebore if the barrel will be accurate or not?
The absolute closest I could get to the rifleing would be about 1/8" with a 300 grain bullet. I never realized T/C  barrels had this much freebore and was just wondering if any of you more experienced handloaders out the have run into this before and were able to get decent results with this much freebore. Tahnks for any help or opinions.

I have not measure the throat, but I also have a T/C factory 44 Mag barrel and it will shoot five shots touching at 50 yards.  I have heard about the long throats before, but all 8 of my barrels shoot great and I have never measured the throats.

In my opinion, I would try shooting it with the COL shown in the book and not worry about it unless the groups are not what you want.

Welcome to the world of TCs long throated 44s. Near as I can tell all the factory barrels in 44 mag are like this. I susspect it has something to do with the 44 hot shot shells they used to sell. They were too long to fit in a normal 44 chamber. Mine is dang near long enough to chamber a 445 super mag in, but not quite.  Acurracy is still pretty good with it though.  KN

KN, that would make sense....I never thought about the hotshot shells. The throat in my barrel would definately accept one though. But you and bullseye both seem to agree on the accuracy being ok in them so I guess I wont worry about it for now. Thanks fellas.

The throat in my 10" factory barrel is so long I can drop a 300gr Sierra JFP down the barrel and insert a case behind it with plenty of room to spare.  KN

Sounds like mine.   A full half inch if not a little more. I bout spit coffee out my nose when I pulled the chamber casting out of it last night.
