I'm looking to add a second barrel to my Ultra .308. Looking for less recoil, possible deer hunting, and just plain plinkin'. Probably going to go with open sights just to keep it simple. May also hand off to one of my sons when they get older. Which do you like? Am I missing a caliber?

The only .243 offered with sights is the superlight, wouldn't be my first choice, they're a bit finickey to get shootin good. You can ask for sights instead, but it will cost about $50 extra on the other .243 barrels. The .30-30 is offered with sights, though.

Of the two calibers in question: 30-30. If this caliber will do the job, go for it. Less chance of performance problems.

Don't be afraid to try a 270 or 30-06 with Remingtons managed recoil loads...they are pretty darn good from all indications...with about 1/2 the recoil and should work nicely for recoil shy folks...also...the 30-06 lends itself nicely to using cast bullets with it...The Lyman #48 manual has cast loads from 115grains...all the way up to 210 grains for loading and velocities from 1242fps and up...something to keep in mind...the 30-30 would do rather nicely as well...with jacketed or cast...

I'd go for and I did go for the .30-30. IMHO you can have a lot more fun with it. A thuty thuty really shines with cast bullets. NOW THAT'S FUN!!!!!
Not to mention cheap. About what a .22 RF costs depending on where you get yer primers.

I would get the .30-30. It is a great deer round. It's also very easy on the cash flow. I've never read of a stuck case with this round. It's great with cast bullets. You can also load pointy bullets.

You didn't say whether you reload or not but if you do you could use the same bullets in the 30-30 as the 308 for plinking. The bulk remington bullets shoot great and are very low priced.
