Recoil on Weatherby .257 Ultra Light and Accumark
« on: December 22, 2005, 04:31:56 AM »
I am leaning towards a .257 Wby in either Accumark or Ultra Light and was wondering if anyone has any experience or thoughts on the recoil on either one of these.  I expect it to be about like my .264 Win Mag 26"barrell or even less.  I think the Ultra Light looks a little better with the lighter colored stock.  Thanks for any feedback.

With 100-grain loads my Accumark has recoil similar to one of my .270s.   Accuracy is under moa with most developed loads.  Death by lightning......

The recoil is going to be just about the same as your .264 Win. Mag., the difference isn't enough to worry about   Lawdog

Mr. Antlersds, Your about right on the recoil issue I've got a  Mark V and the recoil is simular to a 270 but maybe a tad quicker. I absolutly love mine on white tail. The hornady 117 grn btsp really works well on them, but hope to try the barnes bullets later in the off season.

I had been thinking about which Weatherby load I would start out shooting.  I had been leaning on trying out the 115 gr Barnes or the 120 gr Partition.

All depends on what you want to hunt.  Fro deer I use the 100 gr. Barnes TSX and for bigger game I use the 115 gr. TSX.  They are more accurate, out penetrate and are flatter shooting than 120 gr. Partition.  Both of my .257 Weatherby's love the TSX bullets.  Lawdog

I own the Mark 5 WBY 257 mag. and it recoils with the 120 gr bullet 26.55 ft lbs. With the 100 gr bullet it recoils 25.27 ft lbs. That with a 6 1/4 lb rifle. Its about like a 270 Win. :D

I have an Ultra Lightweight in .25-06. It's real managable, but then again I'm in no way recoil shy so YMMV

I've got a Mark V Accumark in .257 Wby and recoil isn't bad at all.  With slow burning powders, you can fill the case with up to around 80 grains of smokeless, which is more than a .270 can hold.  Buy my .270 kicks harder because it's a lighter gun (about 7.5 lbs w/ scope compared to nearly 9.5 lbs for the accumark w/ scope).

Don't let concern over recoil deter you.  I can't think of any reasons not to get a .257 Wby.  It's a great round.
