Win Model 100 cycling problem
« on: December 22, 2005, 06:24:22 AM »
While there may be a common fix for this, I am stumped. I have a 308 Model 100 to repair and have just spoke to others who have similiar problems. A good hunting friend of mine has even said his has been operating like this for years and he just considers it the best single shot rifle he owns! The nature of the problem is cartridge cycling. The first chambered round fires and is ejected smoothly, (or what appears to be smoothly). The problem is the 2nd cartridge is not chambered completely and becomes jamed half way into the receiver. I have pulled the gun apart, cleaned and deburred anything in sight and then replaced springs and extractor/ejector parts and have not resolved the problem. A local hobby smith has suggested it may be the clip and how the next cartridge is delivered to the receiver. I have found no sign of a problem and even changed with known well operating clips. The result is the same.

I need to employee the expertise of the pros on Graybeards.  I know I'm not the first to encounter this. Please give me your thoughts.

 :-)

Hello Turkeyfeather,
It's hard to diagnose such things without the hands on experience but a couple of things might be considered.
If the gas port and gas vent are fouled and not at the correct size, the bolt may go back far enough to eject the spent case but only far enough to just ride the next round up, in which case, it would fail to chamber just as you describe.
If the same thing happens with the third and fourth rounds, it might also point to the magazine hanging too low or at the wrong attitude in the magazine well. A change or adjustment to the magazine latch might be in order.
Regards,
smoji

I assume you've checked the normal stuff, burr on chamber mouth, rubbing or binding on the operating slide, or even a slat spot on the bolt head cams.. Check the extractor and bolt face. This is a push feed action and if the extractor is damaged it can caause problems. Also check for the bolt face being smooth. Might also look at taking you failing mag and trying it in a working m100. Could be the mag's being held too low?
