1911 Ejection
« on: December 22, 2005, 08:10:04 AM »
I have a SA mil-spec Ultra Compact that is beating me up. Doesn't matter if I use the factory mag or my 7 shot McCormick. Two or three rounds per box will either eject and hit me in the forehead or in my shooting glasses. I've had a few bounce off the top of my head. Reloads or factory ammo both do it. My shooting buddy has a Colt Officers model that does the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas? This is my CCW and I don't need hot brass hitting me in the eyes in a gunfight.

I have a SA milspec that used to bouce them off my head, had a smith retension and adjust the extractor. It now works fine, throws them off to the side more and very smartly. It was like 30 bucks or something. He told me if he couldn't get the original extractor to work, he would put in another one, but he didn't have to.

Tn Jim - you can either do what the jimster has recommended or get yourself another ejector, one for a 9mm/38 Super.  They usually change the ejection pattern of the 1911s.  I did that for my old Commander when I got tired of coming home from the range and washing all the halfmoon marks off my forehead where the empties dinged me.  Of course, I haven't yet mentioned how much it always ticked me off to get hit in the forehead with my own empties.  HTH.  Mikey.

Jim,
If you frequently have this problem with multiple handguns, you might want to make sure you are not allowing your wrist to flex when you shoot. An unlocked wrist will allow the gun to toss the brass straight back at your head when it ejects.

I considered that Savage. But after shooting another 1911 and my wifes Taurus PT92 with no beating I'm thinking its just the nature of the beast when dealing with a chopped off 1911. May be time to get a after market extractor.

Or a bike helmet with face shield. :D
New extractor or tuning the one in it will most likely fix the problem.

You may need to take a look at your springs.

Help me to understand Dusty. What would the springs do to cause this? For the telling, the gun was bought new in March and uses the captured spring inside a spring set up. It's had between 400-500 rounds fired through it.

"You might want to check the springs" is about the limit of my expertise on 1911 springs!!  However, a gun that new will not have weak springs (in all likelihood) but that spring under the slide (whatever its called!) may not be the right strength for your gun/ammo combination.  My standard advice is to have a smithy check it out.

That would be the "recoil" spring, my old brain takes awhile to come up with that complicated stuff!! :-D
