Tight bore 22 cal barrels?
« on: December 22, 2005, 09:47:04 AM »
From what I have heard is that "tight bore" barrels are supposed to be a little more accurate than regular bore barrels 22 rimfire barrels.   I am planning to buy a barrel but haven't decided if the tighter bore is actually a better way to go.  Do any of you have any knowledge on this subject?  Would be interested to hear what you have to say.   Don Weathersbee

Hi Don,

I'd ask the benchrest boys for their opinion...  I've heard from a few of them that the tight bore doesn't make that much of a difference... but i'd ask to be sure.

I have a Lilja tight bore on my silhouette small bore and I wouldn't order another one. It is really hard to bolt the action from the shoulder and if you are called to stand down and make your gun safe, you can't extract the round. You have to get the match director to let you fire the round then it will extract fine.

This is not just on my gun, I have seen others have to do the same thing.

I can't tell if it is any more accurate or not since this is the way I ordered it new.

A tight bore should not be a main concern, if the barrel is a quality made barrel it should do very well.

mgann,

might your challenge be your chamber as opposed to your barrel?  Mark, Marv, Daniel?

Dave...I would be willing to bet you 25 cents that it is not the tight bore barrel or the match chamber that prevents a live round from extracting once it has been chambered.

This has happened to me on several ocassions and it has always been that I did not cut the extractor slots deep enough to allow the extractors to completely slip over the case head when the bolt is closed.

Once I removed the barrel and re-cut the extractor slots, the problem went away....Marv

Hey Dave and Metalhead, I haven't thought of that. I will check into it and see if either of the suggestion's are my problem with ejecting a live round.

Thanks
P.S. sorry about the double post, I didn't realize I did that.
