.30 caliber sabots to shoot .223 bullets
« on: December 23, 2005, 02:26:25 AM »
Hello from Georgia,
I recently came across a source for sabots for .30 caliber rounds to shoot .223 at a velocity exceeding 4000 fps. I was curious if anyone has used sabots like this and what the performance was like. Were they chronographed to see the real velocity. What kind of accuracy was obtained. Any reports of terminal ballistics would be very helpful. I find this option very interesting since I have several .308 caliber rifles and a few VERY accurate single shots. I also have approximately 1500 .223 FMJ bullets pulled from military rounds as well as around 800 PSP Sierras left.
This would certainly be a recipe to use them up before they go stale. Any other comments on sabots would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Merry CHRISTmas to all !!!

Dave

GD

From what i have read and seen , Don't waste your time and money on them .

I think Winchester came out with a round called the Excelarator some years ago using this same idea and it did not do very well , I may be wrong on this .

Thanks Tim

I knew i had tried a round with sabots a few years ago in a 30-30 and could never get them to do a very good job . Just didn;t remember who made them .

Had to load them one at a time because it was in a lever action .

They will group 4-5" at 100 and do destroy pests if hit within that range.  I used .224 bullets with them and pushed about 4200fps.   Heck, maybe it was the sabot that did it!!   :)

i too tried the sabots. same results here are why:
1) hard to get and keep the bullet in the sabot during loading
2) even though i opened up the case mouth the sabots wanted to dig into the brass ( or the other way around)
3)skinny bullet was distorted by the rounded stem of the seating die
4)most importantly-the barrels for 30 cal ammo is rifled with a twist that is appropriate for that weight bullet and velocity. when you throw a lighter bullet thru it at high velocity it spins way too fast (over stabilizes) not at all good for accuracy
put em where you want em

You can get 30 caliber varmint bullets of about 110 grains. They work very well and can be very accurate.
