Need some opinions, 1911.

Wanted 1911 model/style with target sights for informal shooting.

I started looking, but there are so many and so many different brands.  So I thought I would narrow done the choices here with the greybeard experts.

Oh yes, need to keep it under $1500.

You are on the same quest I was on last spring. Only you have a healthier budget. I was over whelmed by the choises. Kimber, Springfield, Para-Ordinence, on and on... So I hit the gun shops and gunshows looking at the used market. Finally found a Dan Wesson. (Before this, I thought all they made were revolvers.) It had the adjustable sights, but was the commander size, when I had been looking for a full size. Decided to take a chance, and I'm glad I did. The barrel has 45 Match stamped on it, and I found out that as such it is very tight. Will chamber 45 ball only. But in the last few years that is what I shoot mostly anyway. The main thing is, it is extremely accurate. It will hold it's own or out-shoot any other 45 I've owned, even the longer slides. And it cost about a third of your budget. My point with this long story is; don't fail to check the used market, and "off" brands.

Hey Wally,

You are right about being over-whelmed.  

I thought Dan Wesson was out of business, didn’t know they made autos.  I had a Dan Wesson 357 Supermag years ago, it was a fine revolver.

Glad to hear I can get a decent pistol for less.  The S&W catalog I was looking at had prices of $2000 and more.

i have  a kimber  i bought about 4 years ago.   it was my first 1911.  i had an h k usp 45 at the time.   the h k was nice,  but the kimber quickly became my favorite, and i never used the h k so i got rid of it.  
 
mine will shoot any load i feed it very well; all the way up to 250 grain swc's.   i wouldnt be happy if my gun would only chamber hard ball ammo.

i dont think you can go wrong with a kimber.   if i could only have one pistol,  my kimber would be the one,  and i own some pretty nice pistols that cost much more than the kimber did.

Springfield, and the S&W1911 are great 1911's. Also Kimber.  :D

My recommendation is that you buy a used Kimber Gold Match. Since it sounds like this will be a plinking gun, it will have more accuracy and reliability than you need. The only step up from it will be a custom or semi-custom gun like a Wilson or Rock River.

The Kimbers are great guns ( I have two) but in your price range most of the major gun makers offer a pistol that will fit the bill, I would however stay away from the para-ord. Great gun awful trigger group (not LDA). I dumped mine as soon as I got it, also swapped the slide for an STI. Features I would want would be an
1.external extractor ( I've got over 10,000 rounds thru my "team-             match"and have never had a failure to eject)
2. Adj. rear sight (Nightsight, combat, not really important)
3. match grade barrel
4, Match grade trigger group

I want to thank everyone for the input.  I knew the help would be helpful.

Narrowed it down to the Kimber Stainless Gold Match II.

Next decision, it comes in 40 S&W or 45 ACP.

Oh...You've got to buy that 1911 in 45ACP...40S&W would be a sacrilege...Wouldn't it?  :wink:

I agree with  Mr.Whitetailer , go with the .45 acp but if you must stray try the 10mm instead of the .40 or even a .38 super but ammo for the .38 super may be hard to locate somtimes

don't know if you've bought the kimber yet but if now here is another thing to check out.
find a GOOD pistolsmith in your area - ask around at the matches, who does the best work.
have him clean up a standard (cheap) colt 1991 or better yet if he has a used custom. he will tighten the slide or put in rails, time and fit the link clean up and put in new sear and hammer and fit a bushing, etc.
i have 2 giles and one aliason purchased that way. few "custom" production guns will compare to true hand fitted custom done by someone who really knows what they are doing and the price isn't much different, often better.

:D There are a lot of guns I have not had the chance to shoot yet. But of the ones I have hands down is my Kimber. Wouldn't trade it for anything else. Have not shot a Les Baur or Wilson but hey that's a whole other price range than I'm not able to play in.

OK, 45 ACP it is.

Is the Kimber Super Match II worth the extra $600 over the Kimber Stainless Gold Match II?  Just dreaming.

Just got off the phone...

Ordered the Kimber Super Match II in 45 ACP.  Here in 2 weeks.

More than I was going to spend but I figured I be really good to myself this time.

Any good factory ammo to hold me over until I get dies?

I would just use some cheap 230gr.fmj to get the gun broken in.. depending on what you intend this gun for. 200gr swc with W231 seemed to be the most accurate out of my "team match" Good luck  and let us know how it shoots
