240gr JSP 44cal Remington bullets for hunting
« on: December 23, 2005, 09:15:15 AM »
anyone here use them?im not talking about the 240gr JHPs but the 240gr jacketed soft points that Midway and others sell in bulk for a good price.if so how fast have you pushed them and still had them hold together on deer sized game?

i was thinking that i saw where someone was using this bullet out of their 44mag carbine rifle for hunting.if it holds up to the speeds of a  44mag rifle it should hold up to my 14inch 445supermag contender

what you think?

The 240 gr JSP from Remington was the factory load I used when first hunting deer with my S&W 629 6 inch wheel gun. They worked very well on deer.  By the next season, I had started handloading using the Hornady 240 gr XTP and I found the Hornady XTP to be more accurate in my gun than the Remington factory load.  I was VERY pleased with the XTP and looked no further. But maybe further load development with the 240 JSP would be warranted for a Contender barrel?   pg

Some handguns will shoot those Soft points and alot won't. I've tried them in my 44 without success. So I shoot H.P. bullets. :D

I used them in my 444 Marlin. They work great on deer.  :D

Remington uses that same bullet for their 444 Marlin loads and it works very well on game at velocities of 2 - 2300'/sec or even a bit better.  The 265 grain slug is definately a stout bullet and is made specifically for the 444 - it should work well in the 445 Supemag.  HTH.  Mikey.

Jeff, don't forget the Speer 270 gr. GDSP.  I am using it now exclusively and total satified.  It is a little heavier and has greater penetration.  I am getting great results.

I think you should give it a try and see which one you like.

Larry i tried some of the 270gr Speer bullets after the deer season at the range and they shot with good accuracy at 100yds.i fellow here at graybeard outdoors sent me some along with some others.what are you shooting them out of,44mag,445sm or 444?how fast are you pushing them?can i expect some expansion with them?

thanks all for all your input,
jeff

Hey Jeff,
Sorry for the late response.  I just got back from deer camp.  I shoot them out of my G2 12" and my 629 S&W.  I get grea results and will go with them in the future.  No sense in having a bunch of different rounds when one can do it all.

Just thought I would chime in.  My 10" 6 groove barrel shoots the JSP from Magech as good as any jacketed bullet I have loaded.  The deer that I have shot with that bullet have not gone 10 feet.

I shot the Rem JHP at one in December and the jacket seperated from the core.  It also did not pass through.  I kind of did not like that.  It also shoots well in the 8 groove barrels that I have.  I am pushing it at 1350fps.

I figure with a hole that big through their lungs, I really don't mind that it will not expand the size of a quarter.

By the way, the Magtech 240gr JSP is the best load I have found in one of my barrels.  It consistently shoots well and the price is not bad either. They were backordered last week at Midway.

Same thing happened here.  The entrance hole was about the size of the exit hole.  Might have well have shot her with a torpedo.  Does anyone know what powder Magtech loads with?  I am going to pull one of the bullets and see.  I will try to post the pic of the powder since I am not very powder savvy yet.

I have not tried the .44 SSP from Remington, as I like a heavier bullet for deer.  I have to say, that the 270 GDSP from Speer is the best performing, and most accurate of all the .44 mag loads I have tried.  I handload these over a stiff dose of H110, and the load has proved deadly on deer and hogs.
I shoot the same load from my Ruger SA and my Marlin 1894S.  I have only taken deer with the rifle, but I did kill a hog last year with the Ruger.
