Typical MV for 30-30 or 30-30AI?
« on: March 10, 2003, 02:30:58 AM »
A Couple of questions for those who use these cartridges:
I know a loading manual could give some info but I am more interested in finding out what this cartridge actually does in the field and on your chronographs.
What would be the typical muzzle velocity for  14 inch 30-30 or 30-30AI with a 150 bullet?
For deer what would you consider to be a maximum range under ideal conditions?

I never chronoed the load, but I KNOW a 150 will kill a deer at 125 yards.
35.5 /748/150 hornadysp/cci250. 4x scope, groups 1 inch for 5 shots. I would go to 150 yards with this load on big deer.Further on smaller deer and a very good rest. I have killed ground hog to around 200 yards with this setup.   jh

30 30 win or 30 30 Ack Imp

Using a 150gr bullet & Alliant Re7 my load book lists 2100 fps for a 14 inch barrel.  I was told  by Hodgdon Powder for 30 30 Ack Imp loads start with 30 30 max loads & work up to no more than 5%.    I choose Re7 as   even at max charge it only develops 34,900 CUP & 39,000 is supposed to  be max CUP for 30 30 size cartridges in Contender.

A good friend of mine has a 14 inch contender that will push a 150 at 2350 over my crony here in western NY in -10 degree wind chill. For my money I would do the 30-30 ack before I would do any larger cases in 30 cal.The noise and muzzle flash are nothing compared to my 300 savage barrel.
A new caliber for deer every year...what a way to play!

I think Hodgden's 5% is about it.  Last fall I tried 8%(because my case capacity by water volume increased 8%) and my results were GREAT.  TOO GREAT!!! With a 150gr Nosler BT over WW748 I was getting 2400fps.  My 309JDJ barely beats that w/ same bullet.  I think the Ackley shaped case hides pressure signs that we're used to seeing, but that don't mean the pressure ain't there.  It sure did whack the h___ out of Bucky Whitetail though.  Terminal performance was immediate and final.  We discussed it here and I went back and pulled some bullets.   Walt

mrcasull,
The 2350 MV you mentioned is from the AI version, right?

I appreciate all who have posted--it answered my question.
