Stock breakage???????
« on: December 24, 2005, 10:00:21 AM »
I was reading on "another" forum under the single shots thread and a well known gun writer made the statement that he didn't like Encores because several of his friends (and he claims to have winessed at least one) had problems with the buttstock breaking and said he didn't like the design and it was prone to breaking. That's funny; as in all the Encore threads I've read here and on other forums that is the very first time I have ever heard complaints about buttstocks breaking. I have never heard of it from many people I know that shoot them or from dealers that sell them. ( I'm talking wood here of course)
Anybody here have any comments??

Sadly the encore rifle stocks are fairly week right behind the action.  I have had 3 stocks crack on mine.  They were two walnut stocks and a factory laminated stock.  They all cracked while on the 209x50 muzzle loader barrel.  I think this has more to do with the loading precedure than recoil.  The way the grain of the wood runs in the stocks leaves it prone to cracking.   It really doesn't handle any latteral pressure well at all.  I'm sure all three of mine cracked while loading the rifle.  They will always send you a new stock no questions asked.

THe large hollow area in the wrist of the stock is where the weakness comes from.  Most of the aftermarket stockmakers have an aluminum block in thier to strengthen it up.  I switched to a synthetic stock for a while but about a year ago I got a laminated stock from boyds.  To try to strenghten it up I used agra glass gel to bed my receiver into the stock.  I figured it there was no room to wiggle it would be much stronger.  So far it has held up really well.

Bedding the encore was kind of scarry, you have to make sure to fill all the little cracks and openings with playdo and make sure to use lots of release agent.

I have 4 Encore's with rifle stocks, at one time I had six Encore's. I have shot a lot with them and never had a stock crack or break. I am shooting a 416 Rigby in one and I drilled the stock for my recoil reducer and still it has not cracked or broke.

I doubt that recoil was the culprit in all of my broken stocks.  It was the act of loading the black powder barrel as it takes more and more pressure to seat bullets after a few shots.  I switched to american pioneer powders and it is much easier now.  Pyrodex used to get pretty gummy and it was hard to seat sabots.  If you don't push pefectly down on it the lateral pressure can crack the grain of the wood.   THey never seemed to be too surprized when I called tc about it.

I have 2 muzzleloaders and I never experienced that with them either. I have never really had a problem with them being difficult to load though.

Back when I was using pyrodex it was increasingly difficult to load the 250gr barnes expander sabots,  after 4-5 shots it was darn near impossible.  I'm talking about some serious pushing to get that thing down the barrel.  I was lean my rifle against the reloading bench while I loaded it.  Alot of it probably had to do with me not knowing my own strength and pushing too hard at a bit of an angle.  I wouldn't not get an encore based on the stock breaking and it didn't keep me from getting several more over the years.  I just know that that particular place on the stock is suseptable to cracking.  just look at the grain pattern and you can see the weak spot right behind the reciever about halfway thru the serial number on the back.

two breaks

I had two stocks break and both were replaced by TC at no charge (other than shipping).
Both were walnut.  One was on a 12 Gauge slug gun and it broke right in my hand while firing it....hurt like heck.  The other was on a 209x50 ML and I noticed the crack while hunting deer.

I sold the last stock on EBAY and bought a custom synthetic.  I had to cut my hunting day short because of this obvious weak point in the stock wood. If you are shooting magnum calibers with a TC walnut stock, it's just a matter of time before it cracks....unless you have a real quality piece of wood.  The custom wood stocks all have an aluminum filler in the grip area for added strength.  Just my opinion

I have several T/C Walnut stocks and I shoot a lot. I think I shoot my Encores more than any other rifles or muzzle loader. I usually go to the range once a week and shoot, even heavy recoil barrels. I have one stock I have had for 4 years now and have shot .50 ML, 300 Win Mag, 416 Rigby, 30-06 and 45-70 rounds. Still no split stock.  Where I think some people get in trouble is how tight the screw in the stock bolt.

You have a valid point there.  TC never specified a torque setting.  It is also possible that you just have a very strong piece of walnut.
