noster partition vs barnes-x for moose
« on: March 10, 2003, 04:07:40 AM »
Will a 165g barnes-x out of a 300win mag be a good choice for moose.  I can get these thing to shoot real well out of my 300.  Would I be better off working up a load with, say, a 180g nosler partition.  I know both would be sufficient, but I don't want to short change my self.

I've never shot a moose with a 165 grain, and do know the X bullets usually act if they are a little heavier, due to their construction, But...
Moose are very big animals.  Shooting a 30 cal, whether it be a 30-06 or 300, I'd go for the 180's or heavier.  You really need a couple of feet of penetration on a big moose and you need a bullet that will reach the vitals even at odd angles and through heavy bone.  The 300 is more than enough cartridge, but personally, I would increase the weight to 180, 190 or 200 grains.  Nosler, Barnes, Swift, FailSafe, Trophy Bonded, etc... are all quality bullets and I'm sure you will find one that shoots well in your rifle.

Just my opinion...

as Jukon Jack stated the heavier the bullet probably the better.

It is the old "can it do it" agument.  The optimal shot against the not quite so good shot.  And I think in AK, where a dead animal 10 yards from a river is about 10 hours less work than if 100 yards from a river or road.

Amazing how an animal can move through brush as if parting the Red Sea and we struggle with it.

I like the Noslers too. But my first bull fell to a 225 grain Sierra.

stratocaster,

Last fall in Alaska we used Barnes bullets and they worked just fine.  Penetrate and expand just as they say they will.  Wife used her 6.5mm Swede and I used my M70 .450 Marlin.  If your rifle is shooting well using Barnes X 165 grain bullets then by all means use them.  If you are going to use Nosler Partition's then I would move up to 180 grain to get the penetration that the Barnes gives.  Lawdog

.30 Caliber For Moose-

Hello, aside from all the magazine hype to buy newer-bigger guns and ammo the truth is it wasn't that long ago that the "puny" .30-30 was the king of the roost with a few old WW1 .30-06s sprinkled in and everyone managed to bring home meat.
It's the shooter not the tool, but you knew that already didn't you?

The 30-30 is a grand old cartridge for sure and yeah it'll take moose, but do you really want to spend a couple of grand on moose hunt, in a place you are unfamiliar with, only have a week or so to do it in and limit yourself to 100 yard shots?  Why not spend another $5.00 on bullets.  It doesn't even register on the scale of the cost of the hunt, and you will know for sure you will get the performance from the bullet you need, from 5 yards to 300 yards.
