scope suggestion for new .223 fluted
« on: December 26, 2005, 06:58:57 PM »
getting the new fluted .223 h&r this week and i want some type of compensator scope for it.  you know, put it dead on at 100 and the rest of the dots will lead you to sucess at 2-3-4oo yards or beyond.  any good suggestions for a type of scope like this for a decent price?  i really plan on trickin this baby out with all the acc.  bi-pod etc...  really want a larger scope w/  50 mm front.  i have a few of the tasco varmint that i love.  more because of the looks on the new englands.

Probably the best choice would be the Burris Fullfield II w/ ballistic plex reticle...Sell the free spotter to offset the cost of the scope.

A less expensive alternative would be a mildot scope like a Mueller Tactical...

I put a Bushnell Banner 6-24x40 mil-dot scope on my .223, and couldn't be more pleased with it.  Depending on where you get it, it runs about $115-150 dollars.  I'm not sure on if the dots are really "calibrated" so to speak in relation to the rifle, if thats what you mean by lead you to success.  If you read up on mil-dot scopes, they will help you to figure out the stuff about millirans(sp), and where to hold.  I mostly just use them as a way to "hold off", or as a secondary aiming point for farther shots.  I have mine 1.5" high @100yds, which should put it on at 200, and about 7-8" low at 300.  Then I just take a swag of how far it it, and about how high I need to aim, then put a dot somewhere on the hog that will allow for the correct holdover, and let her fly.  I know, not very scientific, but it works for me.

I've got a Mueller 4x16 mil-dot and it is awesome.  For the money, these Muellers are tough to beat.  If you actually like the Tasco, you'll be blown away by the Mueller.
