Which SUV?
« on: December 27, 2005, 06:26:35 AM »
The cost of diesel fuel and the fact that I don't need so much power has me thinking about trading my 2000 F-250 diesel and getting an SUV.  I no longer have to tow a big trailer, but have a 12' boat on a trailer.  I'll also need 4x4 and some off-road.  Here is what I'm considering:

Ford Expedition
Chevy Trailblazer
Toyota 4Runner

I stay away from Jeep ever since they used the anti-hunting TV commercials.  Which of the above do you guys recommend or do you have others you like?

I like the new Explorers.   I wouldn't know about the 4WD versions, but I haven't been stuck in a two wheel drive model yet,    I had good luck with everything except the a/c in the three I've owned and wore out.  Great cargo capacity and turn radius.
I am partial to the new/old 2001 Tahoe I have also.

my two old pennies worth!

I would buy the Isuzu Ascender wich is nothing more than a trailblazer with a diffrent grille. Why? number one they are cheaper, number two and this is a biggie If you buy the isuzu it comes with a much better warranty than the chevy.

I had a 4-Runner and loved it.  Traded it on a Toyota Tundra after driving it for three years and putting well over 60 K on it.  The only problem  was the electric antenna motor burned out.  I am really sold on the Toyotas

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango. It's all wheel drive but also has 4 high lock and 4 low lock. Mine has the 5.7L HEMI engine, 4 wheel anti lock brakes, tow package and just about every other option but leather seats. I get the same mileage with the HEMI that I got with my 2002 4x4 Club Cab Dakota and my wife's 2003 4x4 Durango. They both have the 4.7L V8. Same mileage with an extra 100 hp and around 85 ft. lbs. of torque.....works for me! And it rides 100 times better!

Both the Ford Expedition and Chevy Trailblazer are nice too. I'm not saying the Toyota 4Runner isn't nice but I work for one of the "THE BIG THREE" so I stick with American made vehicles myself!

MITSUBISHI  MITSUBISHI  MITSUBISHI
The New Mitsubishi Endevor is dependable, affordable, has great fuel economy, and looks sharp.  It has to be the best SUV I ever seen!

I'm getting out of my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer and into a 2006 Toyota Rav4 V6 4x4. I've been looking for something for several months now that will tow my 2500lb boat or small travel trailer, yet still gets decent mpg. The new Rav4 is bigger, has a 269hp 3.5L V6 and with the tow prep package, tows 3500lbs, 0-60mph 6.3 to 7.1 seconds depending on the tester. The TB is a nice rig, but the 15 city and 20 hwy is gonna get real old when gas hits $4+ a gallon this summer. :(  The Rav4 gets 21 city and 28 hwy, looks great to me. Most dealers sell it MSRP cuz they're new and in high demand, got mine for Invoice + $1000, it pays to shop on the net!!

Chev Blazer now I suppose the trailblazers. They are rated a best buy! I just got a used but really nice shape 92 Blazer and I love it. Before that I had a S15 Jimmy and the larger Blazer beats the small ones all to heck.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I've had 4 runners since 87.  I think they are the most maintnenance free vehicle you can get.  Have a 2003 limited now with about 80,000 mi. on it.  The V8 has lots of power and rides like a car.   I have a 02 Tacoma 4 door to haul gas cans and bloody deer.  It rides a little rough with the TRD suspension and the V6 shifts a lot when towing but I love it.

I bought a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and it absolutely rocks! The Unlimited is hte longer version so it actually has some room behind the front seats... it is a beast off road.

I agree with your sentiment LLoyd but now days the big three has vehicles made in Mexico and Canada besides here and God knows where all the parts are made. I pretty much am a Chev/GMC person. I will have to say the toyotas are built tough but too high priced for me even the old beat up used ones. I can buy a really nice chev for at least half the price they want for used toyotas and get just as much use out of them.

You can't be serious.    I'm driving a Toyota Tundra because it was almost $10,000 less than Ford, Chevy and Dodge comparably equipped. You need to find a new Toyota dealer.

Bill I am not talking about new trucks but the used market. I checked the papers and dealers around here and the Toyotas were very high priced for what you got. One example a toyota pickup 4x4 with 136 K miles regular sized cab with only fair rubber. Body decent but nothing spectacular since it was a 92.   $5 thousand firm. That is one example that came to mind but I saw other ads about the same as far as milage and year/price ect. That to me is high priced since you can buy a Chev for half that with more room & more power.  An example I saw was a 96 Silverado loaded extended cab 4x4 for 4200 and I bet you could have pressed them for 4 even. Now that is a 96 vs a 92 with less milage as that truck had 120 K on it.  So I would bet a 92 Chev truck would be in the 2500 range if in good shape. Even with todays gas prices 2500 bucks will keep you in gas for a while.  One problem I seen in the used market is finding a lower milage used vehicle. A 98 Jeep I saw still had 126 K on it more than the 121 K on my 92 Blazer and it is 6 years newer.  Cost was reasonable on the jeep $4500 but it was not as roomy as my Blazer Nor did it run as nice. Folks are hanging on to their vehicles longer and putting on more miles on them before selling or trading them off as the new prices are so much higher.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

If you get a Toyota Tacoma it is made in California at the NUMI plant by UAW workers.  Toyota likes having its suppliers close to the plant so it is likely that nearly 100% of that truck is made within 150 miles of the assembly plant.  Several of their cars are made with 100% of the vehicles made in the USA.  Most of the foreign transplant companies are doing well with high American content, but the big three needs to assemble in Mexico with parts made in Asia.  And this year Toyota will become the worlds largest automobile manufacturer.

OK I'd have to agree on used truck prices. The Toyota costs less new and more used. A pretty good reason to buy a new Toyota if you ask me and there is more American content in them than most AMERICAN vehicles these days.

If ya got the cash Bill I agree with ya. But since I am on a peanut butter budget I need to find the best bargains I can and GMC products have treated me well over the years compared to fords and Chrysler products. I will say I had one Toyota pickup that was a standard cab and a 5 speed/4 cylinder that I bought used about 6 years ago for 500 bucks. Rusty but ran good. I got into a accident with it and hit a full size pickup Tboned it and it was the other guys fault he was parked sideways on the highway at night in my lane.He was trying to turn around and his tranny died. I totaled that toyota but walked away from the accident so I sure cannot fault the way they are built.
