New Guy with Ultra Rifle Questions

Hi, I'm new to the forum, so I apologize if this question has already been asked.

I'm looking for an inexpensive target/plinking rifle and am considering a H&R Ultra Rifle in .223.  Does anyone have experience with this gun.  It looks sharp, but is anything gained over the handi besides cosmetics?

Also, will it fire wolf ammo?  I've been reading here that the 7.62x39mm model will not.

Seems like people get just a tad more accuracy in Ultras than in Handi's, in general. I believe that the extra 2 inches of barrel really helps also.
As far as Wolf ammo, some folks rifles shoot the stuff real good others don't. As far as mine goes, when they were selling the wolf ammo in the green laqured cases, (55gr.)  mine shot them extremely well. But when they switched over to the grey polymer coated cases, the accuracy went out the door. The Winchester USA White Box 45gr. JHP's, seem to shoot well for most everyone.
I'd go with the Ultra personally.

Welcome aboard!!  What Dennis said!!! I chose the Ultra Varmint over the Ultra Hunter and Handi for the 24" bull barrel, no regrets. :wink: Of course, you can choose the fluted Ultra, too for just a bit more...

I've had the .223 Ultra for going on two years, and I love it. It's accurate and just plain fun to shoot. If you don't reload, factory ammo such as Winchester white box and Ultramax are very accurate in these rifles, and not very expensive. If you do reload, you have a little more leeway in what you want to shoot. I can shoot well with mine out to 300yds, which is about the max. effective range (so I'm told) for a .223.

I have yet to check velocity in mine, but the 24" barrel probably helps things. Mine is the 1:12 twist; they're going to 1:9 in some of the new ones, I'm not sure which models will have which. If that's a consideration for you, you may want to check it out (no matter what rifle you pick).

There have been many discussions here concerning Wolf ammo.
Do a search and you will find plenty.
I for one shoot it through my 223 Ultra. Never had a misfire out of it. Not the most accurate ammo for it- around 1 1/2 on good days to 3"+ groups on the bad, but it's fun to plink with and extremely cheap.
Give it a try, just don't expect consistant MOA out of it

Is wolf ammo loaded to Military surplus specks?  I tried it in my .223 ultra and it never performed well. My handi is sub moa with Win white box ammo. Welcome to GB VThunter

I would not fire that .223 Crap in any rifle.
I have experianced several split necks and stuck cases.
Also it is steel cased, so it is hard on the chambers.
The 7.62x39 is another story, never had a single problem.
Functions great in an SKS.

I was just stating that I had used it with no problems.
