.22 Mag Mistake - Update
« on: March 10, 2003, 05:38:13 AM »
I bought a .22 mag barrel at a gun show recently, it had beed a 10" .22 lr
and had been re-chambered to a .22 mag. by a gunsmith in another state.
I thought it might be good for coyotes at 50 to 100 yards.
Well after taking it to the range and putting 3 different brands of ammo through it I find that it wont group better than 2 1/2 inches at 50 yards. from a bench rest.
I am stuck with the barrel and I know that it would work for close shots but I had hoped for better.
I dont want to spend another $75.00 to have it chambered for a .22 Hornet so I thought I would ask if anyone had any thoughts that might help me to make it usable to at least 100 yards??
Thanks

I cleaned up the trigger mechanism and used Graybeards tape idea on the forearm, then tried 5 different kinds of .22 Mag ammo.
The wind was blowing from 10 to 15 mph and changing dirrections (just a slight breeze in Eastern Washington) so I decided to stay at 50 yards.
I was amazed at the difference. The CCI TNT that I had used before was the best, it shot under 3/4 of an inch and the Remington V Max was right next to it.
It actually shot better than my Super 14 .22 LR using Ely Club Match.
I do not know how much the wind effect's the .22, but I was happy with my results.
Maybe this weekend the wind will be under 10 mph and I will try it at 100 yards.

Try shooting the Remington Premier load topped off with the 33 gr. V-max. or the Winchester Surpreme ammo. My 77/22 Mag shoots lousy groups with some brands of ammo, but shoots little tiny groups with the Remoington load.

10" is a pretty short tube for the 22mag and that may be part of the problem. I have also always understood that the bullet/barrel of the 22mag is slightly larger than the standard 22 LR. so you may be shooting through a very tight barrel.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Eastsider,
Try more types of ammo!!
Write down what you've shot already and group size.  Then go out and find something different, for instance if you were using 3 / 40 grn loads, find some 30-34 grn loads & Federal makes a 50 grn HP load.

From what I've read, seen, and experienced - some .22 mag firearms can be very finicky on the load they like.  It is a good round and that 10" barrel should be a good coyote gun, out to 100 yards or so.  Hang in there and try a few other loads!!

By the way when you find a load it & you like, get a brick of them!!

Good luck, Del
I LOVE TO HUNT!
Especially with a Handgun!!

First thing you need to check is the crown. Since some one shortened it, it may not have a good square crown on it. Or it could be nicked or some thing. Put it under a magnifying glass ans see if you can find any thing wrong.  KN
