It sounds like the swiss k31 is the hottest surplup buy right now because there so affordable.  I heard this maybe the last hurrah of them were going to see before they dryup so if you want one now is the time.

Yep also one of the most accurate and that action is nice the Swiss always go overboard when they make something. National Pride I guess. For the money it is a steal. I would bet if made today as a sporter it would cost about a 1000 bucks easy.

I just ordered another one......and maybe a third one soon too.  The word is everyone is grabbing them right now because there cheap and good shooters.  The swede's were cheap once too right? :-D

Berdans in the K31 ammo
« Reply #3 on: January 02, 2006, 01:52:19 PM »
I wonder if you guys are reloading for the K31s or are you buying ammo?

The rifles look nice and seem to be a great buy, but I like to reload and I'd rather not mess with the Berdan primers if the Boxers are somehow available.

I reload and while the brass is now available you can also use WIN 284 brass and one pass through the 7.5x55 dies will make the neck 30 cal and will work just fine. I have 20 of the 7.5 brass and about 60 of the 284 brass altered to 7.5 and I see no difference in performance. In fact I think the 284 brass may be a bit better brass wise. It is a fine and easy caliber to load for so do not let that stop you from getting one of these neat and very accurate guns.

Wolf is now selling reloadable ammo too for this caliber and I think the cases are S&B which I never had any probs reloading with in other calibers that were the S&B headstamped ammo.

Gentlemen, thank you very much.....

I really liked that rifle and everything I read about it said it was a reliable and accurate gun. Now that I know I can re-load the ammo I'll get one of them and play with it at the range. And I'll print out your answers so I don't lose the info.
Thanks again.....Qajaq59

Your welcome. The sites surplusrifles.com and surplusrifles.com both have reload info as does the Hornady reloading manual. I use Lee dies and they work great. One tip for sizing the 284 brass. With the brass case in the die you have to set the die so there is no gap between the bottom of the die and the shell holder. So when it is adjusted the bottom of the die and shell holder is touching with your first case in the die. I have heard some call this roll over or maybe overcamming? Anyway you have to set it so there is no gap with a case in the die. Once you get that set then just make sure you lube the cases well and lube the inside of the neck since your expanding it and your all set it will make those 284 cases work great in the 7.5x55.

I heard the wolf gold ammo is made by prvi-partizan in former yugoslavia they also manufacture ammo for FNM and Igman plus others too.  The yugo brass is the best brass i have reloaded so far it softer brass not so brittle.  Plus most of this new ammo is under $10 a box and its boxer primed. I'm going to buy some swiss surplus ammo too since its match grade ammo.

When I got my first K31, it had faint tiger stripes in the walnut stock, a tag under the butt plate and most of the bluing. I steamed out a few minor dents around the butt and put some tung oil on it.  It is super accurate and has turned into a safe queen.  A cracked stock one should arrive in a couple of days for a shooter.  If the stock is too bad, I'll be forced to make a sporter.  I think I can lessen  the weight a lot by restocking it.  One potential problem will be the large clip hanging out of a light weight stock.  Next I will need a receiver scope mount. Now back to the parts catalogues. One thing calls for another.

I just received another one from AIM Surplus and its a little worse for condition than my last one so we are getting closer to the bottom of the barrel, the stock did clean up and refinish great with a lot of history marks more than my others had but they do look awesome when they are done right.  My point is don't wait too much longer and let this awesome rifle pass you buy its another great quality rifle like the swede mauser is too.  I think that Samco still has the "excellent condition" ones, but i have heard some of the better walnut stocks are gone.  Don't sit on your butts now get this rifle for your collection its a must have, its different and unique and we will never see these awesome swiss watch rifles again.

BTW;  The older the swiss rifle is the better/smoother the action is to work so if you want a shooter/hunting swiss k31 look for an older one. HINT: From what i'm seeing the older ones have walnut stock's.  All the bores look the same condition "great".

Well darn!  I got my cracked birch stock K31 and its too nice to make a sporter.  I had to hunt to find the patch on the toe.  The blue is probably 95% and the barrel looks new.  This one came from Century and the walnut came from AIM and they both had the tag under the butt plate. I am happy with both but still don't have anything I want to sporterize.  Guess I'll just have to shoot them as they are.

How much can I expect to pay for a good k31. What do I look  for other then bore condition and stock?  Where is a good place to shop for one?

Dunham's K31 Rifles
« Reply #14 on: March 03, 2006, 06:46:41 AM »
Paid $99 plus tax at Dunham's during February. It's a 1954 rifle with VG+ bore, great bluing - except for the end of the barrel, and a bonus - 1944 walnut stock (more than a few 1954 models had a 1944 stock for some reason). This one has faint tiger striping in addtition to the avg.+ other grain in the Walnut.

99 bucks at Dunhams for hand pick is a great deal for a fine k31 any day. I have done this twice. And might do it again

Your right get a few while there still affordable from the dealers because on the "guns for sale" sites on the net the prices are doubling and more already and i can't see why when the supply is still around yet. Plus everyone is saying better condition swiss k31's are comming yet too but i'm not too sure about that because the rumors are out there that say this is the last hurah for them.  The best conditioned ones were out there when there was no ammo for them so the ones who purchased them made out now. The ones i'm seeing just need the finish redone and most of the wood looks good when its done. These will follow the way of the Finnish and Swede rifles too they can only go up in price when the supply runs dry.  I would get a few different years and shoot and enjoy them.

BTW; I went to buy new norma 7,5mm brass to try some reloads but the price was $17 for 20pcs.  I found brand new Wolf Gold swiss 7,5mm ammo selling for $9 a box of 20. Since its boxer primed and so affordable i get to shoot it once then reload it.  I'm thinking of reloading the berdan cases too since the brass is so expensive.

At www.sportsmansguide.com  it seems to be sold out everywhere else i was looking for priv-partzan ammo but its all sold out too. They have it in most calibers too and its very affordable and boxer primed too and its the good soft yugo brass and it reloads awesome too.

I want to reload some speer 150gr magnum mag-tips and maybe some 180gr's too.  I've had good accuracy and good penetration/expansion with them.

Just picked up k-31 from AIM did not get hand select or walnut stock :( . Bluing is 50% on top of receiver, barrel is excellent. Looks to me like it road around in a back pack alot. Accuracy is unbelievable with the surplus ammo from AIM.
