Contender Ignition Problems
« on: December 28, 2005, 05:05:27 AM »
I had a Contender that worked flawlessly with a 10" .357 barrel, firing thousands of rounds with no problems.

Then I got a custom Bullberry .223 barrel and had tons of ignition problems.  Misfires, light strikes, etc.  Had every dog and his brother look at it, and one gunsmith said it had excessive headspace, causing the misfires because the rounds were not supported against the blow of the firing pin, but were driven further into the chamber.

I sent the barrel back to Bullberry and they said headspace was OK.

What do I do now?  Is Bullberry jerking me around?

Has anyone else had ignition prob's with the Contender?

Should I have limited my use to rimmed cartridges such as .357, etc?

The barrel lugs on the barrel do not match the frame.  Send the barrel back to bullberry with the frame.  They will properly match the locking lugs to the frame and you will be set.

Your gunsmith knows nothing about Contenders.  The most common cause of misfires, besides the locking lugs not extending far enough into the frame, is too little headspace.  This is usually caused by the reloader not sizing his cases enough; this prevents the action from closing fully and the interlock safety will block the hammer from hitting the firing pun fully.  Sometimes there will be a deep indentation, but not quite deep enough.

Another cause is a gummy action.  Did you know that you are not supposed to use oil in your Contender?  Bet you didn't read that page in the owner's manual, but it is there.  Use a spray gun scrubber/degreaser to remove all oil from the internal action parts and don't put any oil on them!  Oils like WD-40 will dry and gum up, collecting crud until the interlock safety sticks and prevents a full-power strike on the primer.

I'd clean out the action and use factory ammo before I sent it back to Bullberry.  You can check for correct function by using a primed case - if it goes bang, you've fixed your problem.  If not, send it and the frame off to Bullberry.  If it is the locking lugs, be aware that this same thing happens with factory barrels too, it just depends on the tolerences of your frame and the individual barrels.

I have to agree with Lone Star on this.

The only time I have had any misfires is using rimless bottle neck cartridges, mostly using the 223 or 222mag brass. I found I was either seating the bullet too far in to the lands not allowing a full lock up or I had not sized the brass to headspace on the shoulder, which meant the case was being pushed in to the chamber upon being struck by the firing pin.

After these two things were corrected, I have not had any more misfires.

You don't have that problem with rimmed cases.

Give up on it and send me the barrel....I'll pay shipping.

Serioulsy.......experiement with loading techniques...you are either sizing too much or not sizing enough. If Fred says it is correctly headspaced then the first assumption would be that it is and that there is an issue with ammo....not the barrel. If the issue was with the gun ....ie lock up.....it would either cock or not cock.
Breech face to barrel gap ?
