Need help on Hog Loads

I’m working up some loads for a hog hunt and was hoping to get some feedback as to if I’m heading in the right direction.  I am loading for two rounds based on components I already have, one for my Encore and one for my contender.

Using data from Hornady’s loading manual.

For the Contender in 14” 309 JDJ I was thinking of going with a Hornady 165 gr SST.  I also have 150 gr SP that I could load instead.  I planned on pushing these with BL-C2, but also have an IMR powder that is listed in the book (4064 I believe) to try some loads with.

For the Encore in 12” 45-70 I have some Hornady 300 gr HP with IMR 4198 that I have been working on for some white tail loads for next year.  I have only loaded these for the mid range lever actions, but was thinking of adding a little more pop for some hog loads, however there is no data listed in the high range Ruger loads for a 300 gr bullet.  Should I not go above the lever action powder range for a 300 gr bullet?  Would I just be wasting powder above a certain point with a 12” barrel and if so where?  Also would I be better off going to a 350 gr bullet for more power instead of loading up the 300 gr?  

I know what it takes for a white tail as I have plenty of experience here, but none to go on for hogs.  So any help here would be appreciated.

I've killed several wild hogs and I have discovered that a 300 grain bullet out of the 45-70 will do them in. A good deer bullet will work well on hogs. I really see no problem with the 45-70 or the 309 with  the loads you listed.

  In Pet Loads from Ken Waters, he shows the following loads for the 45-70 for use in Marlin, Ruger and Siamese Mausers:

43 grains IMR 4198 with 300 grain Hornady = 1882 fps
45 grains IMR 4198 = 1932
50 grains IMR 4198= 2057

All are from 22 inch barrel, of course you'll get less from you 12 inches of T/C.

  Those 300 grain Hornadys are fine bullets and will kill anything that walks on this continent, might not be my first choice, but they will kill and kill cleanly.  They have also been extremely accurate in my Ruger and Marlin.

Thanks for the info, this should give me a good start and a little more confidence in these loads.  I'm still a little lacking in knowledge of the whole expansion and penetration characteristics of various bullets.
