Help me decide on which 7mm-08 rifle
« on: December 28, 2005, 01:31:22 PM »
I've narrowed my rifle purchase down to 2.
Both NIB, 2004-2005 models
1.)Browning A-Bolt Composite Stalker; $615.00
22" Blued tapered barrel

2.)Remington 700 Composite Varmint 24" Barrel Heavy SS fluted $655.00

Both 7mm-08, and to be used for Whitetail Deer, and light target shooting.
I will be reloading for the cartridge.

Any advice on the 2 would be greatly appreciated.

If you're target shooting as well the nod has to go to the Rem, as much as I don't personally like them.
Brownings are lovely but the fluted heavy barrel will be your friend.
Mind you, don't buy it if you don't like a bit of extra weight.

If the primary use is for whitetail hunting I would not pick that remington if you plan on doing any walking it is real heavy. I have the browning Abolt stainless stalker in 270, nice rifle but my favorite is my browning  Abolt micro hunter in 7mm-08 weighs just over 6lbs a joy to carry very accurate and does not pound me when I shoot targets off the bench

Personally I don't think either is your best choice. You're looking at two pretty widely separated end uses for the rifle. For a pure target rifle you'd want a heavy barrel like the Remington mentioned. But for a hunting rifle it stinks, just too danged heavy.

Why not take a look at the Remington LVSF. I think it comes in 7-08 and is an ideal compromise rifle for the uses you mention. It's got a heavier than normal barrel with flutes to make it lighter and a light weight but stable synthetic stock. For the dual purpose rifle you propose I think it pretty well fits the bill.

:cb2: For target shooting I'd go with the Savage. It will outshoot the Remington and the Browning for a whole lot less.

For a light weight deer rifle, look at another Browning--the BLR.

RV;

Since you are east of the Mississippi, I think you made a very good decision on the caliber. I've been using the 7mm-08 for over 15 years, and I believe it to be the best caliber I've ever used.
The two I've had, have been short barreled rifles.
One was a Rem. Model 7FS w/ a 18-1/2 inch barrel. I sold it to JPH45.
The other I have is a Ruger Mod. 77 MKII w/ a 16-1/2 barrel. This was my late fathers rifle. Both shot 1MOA at 100yds.
I'd go with the 24 inch barrel Remington, just for the extra 2 inches and more velocity.
I even used the Mod. 7FS out west, prairie dog shooting, and it worked fine.
That 24 inch barrel would even serve as a great varmit rifle on chucks or yotes.
Good luck on your decision.

Some of us are on a tight budget.I bought the Stevens model 200 in 7-08
and I'm very happy with it.But if I had to choose between a Remington or
a Browning,Id go with the Remington.I've heard Browning out-sources
some of there parts. 8)

Browning doesnt outsource some of the parts, they outsource the complete rifle. as they are an importer, not a manufacturer.

You seem to have you choices whittled down.  So I will do my best to add to the confusion.  You might want to check out Tikka, and CZ.  Both are good shooters at fair prices and good quality.  To further add to the situation may I suggest you consider .308.  It's funny how things run in cycles.  I shoot mettalic shilohuette and lots of shooters used .308, then 7mm-08 became the one you had to have, now its .260.  Probably be back to .308 soon.

Weel if the choices are a Remintion or a Browning I'd go ...

Kimber.  It's handier for deer.  And it's PURDIER.
Just my 2 cents

Between the 2 choices...I would opt for the Remington...but as Greybeard said...would be a might heavy to lug around all day...

I think Graybeard is right on with his sugestion. I was just handling the rifle he sugests a few days ago in 308. It has that barrel heavy feel but still not to heavy to carry around. Regards, Byron  ;D

How about a Remington 700 mountain rifle in 7mm/08?

Model 7 CDL, 1.5x5 scope, 7-08.= ideal rifel for all hunting east of the big river.  Just wait 1.5mins between shots when bench shooting.

I would before I made a purchase. A Tikka T-3 can be had for less than the prices that you list; weighs less and odds are will outshoot both straight out of the box.

I have a remington model 7, 7mm-08.  I bought it used, I usually buy new.  I have been extremely tickled with this little rifle.  No modifications other than the trigger.  It will shoot 1/2 groups with the proper handload.  It is a joying to carry and shoot.  If I had sell all my other deer rifles for this one I would.  I know alot of guys don't like remington but I sure like those model 7's, good luck.

Deerman, I know what you mean. I have one and bought a new Mtn Rifle 700 in 7/08 and am torn what to do with my Seven. I am thinking about rebarreling it into a 6MM for something different. Seven's are great little big guns!

Out of the two listed, A-Bolt.  I've had nothing but great luck with mine - good value, MOA groups.

I think the Brownings are too shiny for hunting and the Remington is too heavy. These are just my personal tastes though, you need to handle each one, and maybe some others, and choose the one that feels "right" to you.

I just can't believe nobody is going with the Kimber Montana...??  Its light, good-looing (for a composite!), and pretty dern accurate!( a LITtle better than MOA groups with factory---I'll improve that with handloads when I get the time)...  My 7mm-08 with Leupold 2.5x8x36mm scope weights about 6.25 lbs, total, I think.  I really love it for carrying around, pulling up into the tree stand, etc.  Kimber, dude!

Fair call, but how much is the Kimber compared to the Browning or the Rem?
Where I live it's a whole lot more expensive.

I paid close to $900 for the Kimber, but I thiink the A-bolt is about $600, right?  From the start, it weighs about a pound and a half, more than the Kimber.  I think the Kimber will hold its value better, has much better fit/finish/attention to detail, and is all stainless and Kevlar (stock)...might cost some more, but

My choice would be a Browning Stainless Stalker in 7mm-08, I had a Kimber Montana 7mm-08 and sent it down the road.  I had high hopes about the Kimber and just loved the fit and finish and the light weight was incredible, but it just would not shoot well enough for what money I felt I put out for it. After all was said and done, bought a Browning and have been very satisfied with the accuracy etc..

Thanks for all the info and advice.

But, I am curious as to how the 700 LV SS performs for you. I have a 7mm 08 in a Browning BLR and love that combo. I don't own a bolt gun due to my handicap...I'm left handed. But, I hope to add a bolt to my collection soon.

For me the choice of 7mm-08's is easy.  A Browning BLR wins hands down.  Fast to operate.  Easy to scope, light, short, quite accurate.  That my 2 cents worth.

I agree. I love my BLR in 7mm 08. But, I have never owned a bolt action. Being a lefty, I probably never will own a bolt in 7mm 08. When I do buy a bolt, it will probably have to be in a "normal" caliber us lefties are forced to buy...308. 30-06, 270, 243.
