Tougher than ?????
« on: December 28, 2005, 05:02:11 PM »
Was in my tree (deer hunting) stand this afternoon, looking over a mowed pasture with scattered brush, when a coyote pops out of the woods and starts down the edge in my direction. He's about 200+ yds out so I decide to see how close he'll get. He stops and snoops once or twice and I figure he's gonna break off in the woods again before he gets to the feeder. He stops and looks. I'm tracking him and start to squeeze when I remember the hand squeek. I wet my whistle and start kissing the back of my hand. He throws his head up and comes around the feeder, stops one last time and I send a 100gr .243 his way. As I recover from the recoil I see him fall over like he is parallized. I figure that's it. I check him through the binocs and no movement. I go back to looking for deer and about a minute later I look his way and he's picking his head up and licking his side. He tries to crawl, but just spins in a circle. I send another round since I don't like to see anything suffer. Boom, no movement. A minute or 2 later I look over and he's still moving, just like before. Well, He@#! I draw down on him again and let one fly. Not 10 sec later he's still trying to crawl off. At this point I decide to get out of the stand go to the truck to get my 45 for a head shot, but then figure by the time I do all that, he'll be dead. Sure enough, no more movement. I figure I missed him with the last two but after I picked him up I got him at least twice. I'll have to skin him to know the whole story, but even so that is one tough coyote. Best forget those 22s.

Let us know what you find Dan. Sure does sound like one tough yote though as I am sure you will find large bruised bloodshot areas on both sides.  :D

I saw a coyote shot at approx. 10 yards with a 243 Win using 58 gr. V Max bullets this Fall. It was the classic bang-flop. As a matter of fact,  pieces of fur and coyote flew all over the place. It was an awful messy sight to see and the pelt was totally useless.
I have, and use, 4 different 223s and I've seen the bang-flop many times while using it. The key is using bullets designed for the game that you're hunting. The 100 gr 243 bullets are usually designed to penetrate and expand on deer sized game, not coyotes. A hp or V Max bullet in 243 should do the job just fine. The guys that use the 243 for fur usually use bullets in the 70 gr - 87 gr weights for coyotes. No matter what you shoot, the coyote is still one tough animal.

Yup, unless your pelt hunting and want to save the fur drop your bullet weights down on the 243 to no more than 80grs. Use a hollow point varmint bullet and he will go nowhere. I have shot several broadside just behind or in the shoulder. It's not a pretty sight. Entrance hole the size of a pencil and exit hole the size of a softball. :D

I've shot them with .22s, .223s, 30.30, .308 and most required multiple shots.  Some of it could be blamed on my shooting ability but usually it was because the yote is one tough hombre.  The best bang flop of mine was when I was goose hunting.   A big coyote came trotting down a levee I was sitting on and met a load of 31/2 inch steel shot at about twenty yards.  I didn't need a follow up shot.

how about 117gr hornady sst in 25-06?  should i drop some in weight   ( I shot an armadillo at 30 yards and he didn't even twitch, same with 2 small deer)
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

coyotes are tough,no dout about it.I have had happen to me to many times what the starting post stated.but never with a caliber larger then a .223.I have found that the .223 shooting poly tipped bullets at close range,do just what they where ment to do.blow up.no penatration.but when the coyote is out aways.they work excellent. But I do not shoot poly tipped bullets a coyotes anymore.I found to keep em down,Penatration is needed.so in the chambers goes Barnes triple shocks 53gr bullets and the remington 55gr PSPs.they work fiiiine.
I normally use an H&K 630 in .223,it has a polygonal barrel.does that make a differnce on the bullet going down the tube when fired?the barrel seems tighter then land and grooved ones.does it change the bullet with the polygonal riflings that make them explode better?this I ponder offten.as I have a .222 rem and shoot the 40gr sierra blitz kings out of her and it kills the coyotes dead at all ranges.just a wonderfull coyote rifle.but its a bolt gun and I prefer the semi auto over the bolt when out callin as I normally have multiples come chargin in.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

A friend borrowed my 45-70 to eliminate some very destructive
hogs on his property. While waiting for them he saw a coyote
at about 50 yards out. That 300 grain MAX loaded hollowpoint
struck almost full head on in the chest and I have seen roadkill in better shape than that coyote was in afterwards. Would have been a beautiful
pelt, It was amber in color. In the words of Rooster Cogburn, "Too Much Gun"

Grey fox are really tough too. WE had to shoot one 8 times last year before it went down. Although we were using 22s all the shots should have been lethal and all the shots were within 50 yards. I shot one while deer hunting this year with my 50 caliber muzzleloader with 335 gr xtp mags. The fox was only ten yards and the hole was as big as a softball and the only thing holding the two halves together was about 2 in around the spine. He still ran 45 yards. I think that most wild animals can take a wallop and keep on going once adrenaline kicks in.

I can see you guys are not ONE SHOT...ONE KILL guys lol. Bullet placement is what it's all about, unless your a coyote.
I don't play games with coyotes, I use 22-250s and swifts on em, sometimes 7mm 08s and 308s. Yet, I've seen coyotes run away after there hearts were shot out, not to far but they ran.
You got to respect coyotes guys.
