CZ 458 Lott
« on: December 30, 2005, 12:30:54 PM »
does anyone hear have the 550 american safari in 458 Lott with the laminated stock. I was wondering if these stocks were holding up or if they had to be worked before firing. ( crossbolts and glassbedding) I handled one in a local shop today and it was a solid rifle fine action and trigger and the weight was just right for me. Has anyone heard of the laminatyed stocks cracking?

I have one with the standard stock that after 50+ rounds hasn't cracked.  If it cracks, I'll get a synthetic stock for it.  Logically, synthetic stock should be less prone to cracking but if mine cracks, I'd rather invest the extra $100 or so in a synthetic stock.

Even though I got the standard stock, it's quite pretty with a little figure.  If it was much prettier, I wouldn't want to take it hunting.

Grumulkin how do you like your CZ and is it in 458 Lott? I had my heart set on the ruger77RSM but i thiought i would try the CZ as they seem to have a great reputation. Was going to get the standard walnut stock and have it bedded and was going to have two steel crossbolts added before i shoot it, but then i held this laminated model and i realy loved the feel of the rifle, so now my choice is maybe get the laminated add the crossbolts and have it bedded or buy the cheaper model with the standard walnut stock and send it to McMillan and have them bed there synthetic stock to it.I just dont understand in this day in age why CZ cant put together a stock that wont crack upon firing i just cant figure it out.

Yes, my CZ is in 458 Lott and I love it.  Since my wife, no less, got if for me for Christmas, I haven't shot it a lot (50+ rounds) but so far I've had no problems with it.  The recoil pad is well designed and the recoil off hand is not unpleasant; off the bench you'll probably want a bit of padding.  I have no complaint about action smoothness and the set trigger is really nice.  I'm in the process of working up handloads; I think it's good for a least 2 to 3 MOA with iron sites (since it's a "dangerous game" rifle I don't intend to scope it).

I've heard the stocks don't hold up to the recoil but I'm hoping mine will since it really looks quite nice.  I'll be more confident in it if it holds up to a couple hundred rounds.  If it breaks, I'll get a composite stock for it even though the stock is covered under warranty for a year or two.

I found an African big game site a while back but don't have it anymore unfortunetly.  Quite a few WH, (white hunters), and other guides use the CZ in 458 Lott.  I have heard about the issues with stocks cracking but only in the walnut versions but none in the laminated stocks.  If you went with the walnut, the cross bolts are not very expensive to have installed.
I am going to buy one in .505 Gibbs soon, I hope.  The trigger is wonderful and the sights are very usefull as compared to the three stage sights I have used on other much more expensive dangerous game rifles.

Go for it!
