howdy yall...my brother and i each got a ruger 10/22 LR for Christmas and we were wondering what loads would work best for yotes? right now we have some federal hollow points, but we have not been able shoot the guns yet so we have had some time to think.
What do yall think?

I would try the CCI Velocitor 40gr. bullet or the CCI Stinger 32gr. bullet they mushroom out very good and give good penetration. Mag-Check

The consensus here will be that the .22 LR isn't big enough for a coyote.  I wouldn't know, as I've never even shot one.  I do know that I put down an old farm dog at close range (2-3ft.) with a .22 pistol, and I thought it was out with the first shot, but when we got to where we were going to dispose of it, it was still holding onto life, just barely.  Now a LR out of a rifle is a totally different story out of a rifle, as I use one to put down livestock at work all the time and it only takes one shot, but again, this is at the same 2-3 ft.  I might get flamed for this, but if I saw a coyote when out walking, I would take a head shot if you could get within about 30yds...just be sure to put the bullet where it will do the most good.

Pintaildrake.

I wouldnt advise any one to use a 22LR on a coyote unles he is in a trap, Just not enough gun for the job. You might hit one and he would run off to die a week or two later. Just not a good idea.............Joe............. :D

Unless you can touch the barrel to the yotes head...dont shoot a 22lr at anything larger than a groundhog.

I have seen coyotes run away from 223's up to even a 300 Weatherby mag. No doubt a 22 will kill one...just not effectively every time.

However...Im not here to stop you...just giving you a warning that it is not a good coyote caliber. The magnum of 22lr shells would have to be Aguila Supermax (30g 1750fps)...CCI Stinger (32g 1650fps)...and CCI Velocitor (40g 1400fps).

Go for it if you wish but dont expect to get the animal every time.

I wouldn't want a 22LR to be my calling gun.  Just not reliable enough.  However, if you must, go with Stingers.  They pack much more of a puch that the regular 22s do.
It's all a hot mess...........

I personally wouldn't do it. I had a yote come in on my setup two years ago while turkey hunting. I hit him at 31 yards with a Win. High Velocity 3 in. mag loaded with #5 shot. Solid neck/head hit. He rolled then ran over two hundred yards. I tracked him to see if I needed to hit him again. Don't want anything to suffer. When I found him he was dead and shot to pieces. They are tougher than you think they are. Use enough gun.
