Got one of these for a Christmas gift. Works great on slicing potatoes to fry. Just wondered if anyone else has one and how they work for skinning and filleting fish.

Dear Cookieman:
I got one! Same brand as in your link. A friend gave me one when he returned from Alaska.
Very... different...to use in the kitchen, simply takes a little getting used to. Just count all your fingers before you start, and go slow till you get comfortable.
Good tool, works fine, I'm just so used to reaching for a knife.

Yep, I am sure there will be a few mangled panfish before I become proficient at filleting with it. WOW what a tool.

I picked the largest one up for my dad for christmas (8"). He seems to like it, and I'm itching to try it out myself...now I just need to find a way to sneak it away when he's not looking.......

A friend of mine brought one back from Alaska a few years ago and I've only used it for kitchen duty so far. I've been intrigued by them since I was a child. I remember seeing little eskimo children eating seal blubber with them in National Geographic or something. It does sem a very practical cutting method.

It is basically a cabbage chopper. The Eskimo's did not have steel until the traders came. One of my aunts has several cabbage choppers dating back 200-300 years.

To appreciate an ulu you really have to see an Eskimo fillet silvers and kings with one. They are really fast!
