MOOSE BULLET ?
« on: January 02, 2006, 06:21:03 AM »
I plan on taking my WBY .300 mag for moose.  I am using Barnes 180 gr. triple shock bullets and they are very accurate.  Would they be OK for moose ??

Should work

From what I have read on them they should work fine.  Barnes has always made quality bullets and this one is designed for maxinum penetration with some expansion.  The .300 Wby. will be almost ideal.

MOOSE BULLET ?

You've got six to seven months.  I would try some 220gr or 250gr bullets for that Whby Mag.  If you can find some that shoot well I feel that you would be better off.  Yes I've shot Moose with the 180gr bullets with an 06, but I feel that they are a little light.  I've seen a lot of Moose get away after being shot with .30 calibers.  Stay away from the shoulder, it's heavy bone.

I know of a few moose that met thier end due to a 180gr partition out of a 300 win.  It they shoot good out of your gun I'm sure they will work just fine.  Sourdough is right those shoulders are some really big bones and might better be avoided.  I saw a 180gr partition get stopped by a moose spine,  didn't even break the spine, but did knock the moose down.  Needed a finisher.

300 Wby and 180 triple shock
« Reply #4 on: January 02, 2006, 10:43:56 PM »
An awful lot of Alaskan moose die every year from 180 gr 30 cal bullets.  I use the 300 win and 180 or 200 gr bullets - mostly partitions.  But I don't hunt moster animals - almost pray I don't find one as they are SO MUCH WORK.  But I don't feel under gunned.  Sometimes I do wonder if a fatter bullet might be better.

But heck those triple shocks should penetrate very well especailly with the Wby.

Bear, your observation on that 180 partition is interesting - can you share more info - cartridge, distance, approx muzzle velocity?

The little moose I got this year was hit high behind  the shoulder with a 180 X at about 30 yards; it clearly jolted and slowed the animal, which was trotting, but didn't stop it. Second shot was a 200 gr Speer hot core 40 yds maybe, a bit behind the ribs and angling forward; and dumped the moose in about 3 seconds. As I fired a third shot the moose dropped and I put a big nick in his nose.  I really don't like shooting from a bobbing boat (motor off) but that was the opportunity and I took it.  The first shot may have been enough but I wasn't going to wait for him to get into thick brush.  Or, that was an old box of X bullets and I wonder if its performance was as good as the current production.  I didn't do an autopsy to figure it out.  That first shot made a noticebly different whack sound than the second shot that was a real solid Whump and the moose sagging.

MOOSE BULLET ?

It was a follow up shot on a spikefork that I had punched thru the ribs with my 9.3x62.  It was a slight quartering to shot about 270 yards, high on the shoulder, stopped dead at the spine.  Knocked the moose down but didn't penetrate the spine, must have been the shock to the spine that knocked it down.  The bullet looked perfect, exactly like it should.  You could have cut it out of a nosler add.

I wouldn't hesetate to use 180gr partition in either the 300 or 30/06 as this bullet has worked for several moose over the last few years for my hunting buddies.

Not a problem at all, great choice of bullet in my opinion.  :D
