field report/new 45-70

Just got in yesterday from my new years hunt with my new 45-70.  I now have a new favorite weapon.  Sighted it in friday afternoon when I got to the camp.  2inch group at fifty yards with open sights.  Didn't try 100 yds. - my eyes aren't good enough.  Saturday morning at 8:15 took an 8-point at 40 yds.  Winchester 300gr. HP did the job.  Shattered both shoulders.  He went about 30 yds.  I couldn't be happier with this christmas present.  Will put a scope on this week and go back in two weeks to try again.  I plan on ordering a 280 barrel after the season and probably get an ultra to take care of a few coyotes during the offseason.  I'm hooked!!

Sewell,

 How cool to kill a deer with a new rifle on its first trip into the woods!  You'll like that .45-70, I love mine.  And the .30-30.. And the .280 I just got.

  I've only taken one deer with the .45-70 so far, an 80 yard shot with a 405 Rem SP handload.  Chrono'd 1478 avg, so not real hot.  The 125 lb 6 point went straight down.

 I have Simmons 4x32 shotgun scopes on both the .45-70- and .30-30, really like 'em.  Light and compact, and generous eye relief (something that's gotten a lot more important in my mid-40s).

Congrats on the take..

You should be able to get hole cutting accuracy out of the Win Super 300gr HP's at 50 yards.     I do with open sights.

Thanks for the congrats.  The shattered shoulders were his, but mine is a little sore.  I'll post a picture this week.  (have to figure out how to do it)

:D , Welcome aboard buddy!! Glad to hear you like the gun and caliber as well as being happy for your good fortune with the deer Saturday. That was a quick indoctrination for the gun!!! The 300 grain HP's are great for deer sized game. If you really want penetration and have to shoot a Rhino, Water Buffalo or Elephant there are plenty of other loads out there from the 405 factory SP's to some awesome 500 grain loads. Buy a cheap Lee Loader for about $15 and your off into reloading and expermenting with the easy to load and fun straightwalled cartridge. Some even use it to shoot groundhogs!!!....<><.... :grin:  

P.S. - be very very careful, you too could become infected with Handi-itus and become a full blown Handholic. It's VERY contaigous, my neighbor and 2 friends in Maine caught it just be associating with me!!! :grin:

Congrats! I put the Choate Varmit stock on my 45-70, really tamed the recoil for my 64 year old bad shoulder, used the 2X7 Mueller  scope, good combination!
