6mm TCU scope choice?
« on: March 10, 2003, 05:47:54 PM »
I have a 6mm TCU which I need to scope.  Living in Colorado I have plenty of opportunities for long shots.  I currently have a .223 bolt action with a 6X24 and spend a lot of time on 24x.  This rifle is a heavy barrel so I don't carry it much, just set up and pound prairie dogs or call coyotes.  I am intrigued by the Burris 3-12, but it is a bit spendy for poor me.  I know some of you guys use rifle scopes on Contenders and am curious how that is working out.   I am concerned most about "scope-eye" and don't need any crescent shaped scars over my right eye.  I know the 6mm TCU has pretty light recoil, but have never shot one.  How many of you guys use Intermediate eye relief scopes?  I don't really plan on shooting the 6mm TCU off hand, although I am sure I will a few times.  Most shots will be made lying down off a bipod, sitting with elbows on knees or using shooting sticks.    So let me have it, gimme your best suggestions for scope choice for this barrel.  I am making a fore-end as we speak, pics when it is done.

Thanks, Bob

i say the 3x12 burris is what the barrel deserves, even if you have to wait the extra time to save enuff money. the 6tcu is one great caliber and really would shine under a 3x12 burris.
now it's my opinion that a riflescope will not work well on it. i'm in the process of trying it out on a .223. my first outing resulted in a banged up nose.  i'm gonna try one more time with 40 gr bullets and blue dot powder for reduced recoil. some guys do use a riflescope on some bigger calibers but they pull it back a ways and sight thru the small opening with black around the outer edges of the scope. i wouldn't care for that myself.
you may check into other riflescopes with longer eye relief, like a leupold or even a simmons aetec, which i think has 5" of eye relief.
there are cheaper handgun scopes than the burris 3x12, but not with the amount of magnification that 6tcu deserves. unless of course you were in thick woods, which is not the case.
i had my friend build me 3 walnut forends. one for a encore, and two for my contenders. two of the forends are about 2 3/4" wide. very nice for the bench. dang he did a great job on em, they are pretty sharp lookin too. good luck with all your endeavors. :-D  hehe i like that word :)

May I suggest that another option is a Burris 10X.  I have a 6mm TCU coming from Dave Van Horn due in next week that will be wearing a 10X.  I do agree that such an accurate barrel rates a quality scope.  The 3-12X and the 10X are both outstanding scopes that would match your barrel well, but the 10X might save you a few dollars.  I have attached links to an auction for a used 10X and a retail link for Natchez Shooting Supply.  They seem to have the best price on a new one.

That used scope is a rifle version - we're comparing apples and onions here!

No, I am comparing apples to apples.  If you look at the picture of the box you will see that this is actually an Intermediate Eye Relief scope and can be used on a pistol.

What it appears to be missing versus a brand new one, is parralax adjustment and target turrets.  I like those features, but if you are looking to save a couple of bucks, you can get by without them.

Well, you are correct. You put that IER rifle scope on your 6mm, and shoot it ....once. Or maybe 5 times since you'll be expecting it. Then tell me how many ibuprofen you took to tame the stinging on your nose/forehead area. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've been down that road before. I'd take a shotgun scope before an IER riflescope.

If you go to the Burris WebSite and look up a 10x IER Scope you will actually find it listed under the Handgun Scope section. If memory serves me correctly (I was unable to open Burris' Scope Specification chart this morning to check for sure) the 10x IER Handgun Scope has betweem 10" to 14" of Eye Relief which should provide you with more than enough Eye Relief to use on your 6mm T/CU.

While I have never used a Burris 10x IER Handgun Scope, I do currently have a couple of the Burris 3x12x LER Handgun Scopes. The 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scopes are great, and in my opinion have no peer for the long range Handgun. I have always shyed away from buying a 10x Burris IER Handgun Scope due to the very small 4' Field of View at 100 yds. With the 3x12x LER Burris Handgun Scope at 12x the Field of View is 7'.

Burris' m/n for the 10x handgun scope is 200263. The box in question is 200260. The question that needs to be asked is if Burris changed their m/n or if this is a model that carries a 3-4.7" eye relief. The model 200260 is not listed on Burris' site. (discontinued or changed) If the model # has been changed, then the used scope carries 9-12" eye relief. Just some info to help w/ someone's decision.

TC Nimrod,
The eye relief on this scope is 9"-12".  This is a handgun scope, not a rifle scope.  There is no danger in using it on a 6mm TCU.

SD Handgunner,
Good point about the FOV.  I will be using mine for long range work only so the 4' FOV @ 100yds. won't bother me.[/b]

BobMachus,
In your original post you mentioned that you spend most of your time on 24X.  I would assume based on that most all of your hunting is at distance.  If you do much hunting inside 100yds, I agree with SD. Stick with the 3-12X.
