Any benifit to a 460 S&W?
« on: January 02, 2006, 01:22:45 PM »
I currently own several Encore pistol barrels such as 308, 44 mag, 243 win etc.  Is there any benifit of a 460 S&W over the barrels that I currently own?

Well, if you ever plan to deer hunt in Illinois, you couldn't use your 308 or 243 so if you wanted a 200 yd gun a 460 would do it.  Bottleneck cases must be a max of 1.4" length but there is no limit on a straight walled case.

Did I give you reason enough?

I would have to honestly say no.  The only benefit is you have another barrel that shoots 460, 454 Casull and 45 L/C's. But there is nothing wrong with that.  :D

One never knows just when the Rhinosaurus-Rex may return.  You need to be prepared.  Actually I've had a little of the same itch myself but my achy 'ol hands keep saying NO to my teenage mind.  Never thought I'd consider any barrel more potent than my 45-70's.  Sad truth is...I don't shoot them near as much anymore. :? , Walt

I just got my 15" 460 SSK. Tack driver with 200gr sst and corbon. No fluke. A friend received his the same day. Sighted them in together. Both guns shot sub moa groups at 100yd.

JD of ssk industries said Hornaday and Cobon claim the new heaver ammunition is beter. Do not know how.  One big hole at 100 is just one big hole.

I find myself enjoying the Corbon 300 grain 45 Colt +P loads in my 460 a lot more than the 460's and 454's. Almost 65, and cartlidge gone in both wrists and arthritis, too many years drilling and pumping spray cans in the pest control business.

for anything past 100 yards the .44 doesn't compare to the .460.
not in accuracy, retained energy or trajectory.
as for the rifle cartridges the .308 will be as effective as the .460 even when fired from the short barrel. the .243 with its lighter bullet and bigger percentage velocity loss won't do as well.
put em where you want em

If you want to hunt in Iowa you have to use straight wall cases too.
It performs better than the 445 Super MAG let along the 44 Mag.
Shooting the Hornady 200 grain factory ammo in an 16-1/4" barrel I do not move the cross hairs off of the 8" steel plates from 100-200-300 yards!!
It worked perfect out in Indiana last November on deer as a handgun.

I would suggest a break too.
