Which Blackhawk?
« on: January 02, 2006, 05:01:24 PM »
I've always been a double-action guy but lately I've been thinking more and more about a 4 5/8" Blackhawk in .357. Trouble is, I can't decide whether to pick up a 50th Anniversary Flattop or the standard Blackhawk. I've got a pretty big paw and the standard Blackhawk feels pretty good, but I haven't been able to find an Anniversary model to handle.

I intend to use this revolver for woods carry and hunting Blacktails in heavy cover at 50 yards or less. Should I hold out until I can check out the Flattop? I understand that it's got a bit smaller frame. What do you guys think?

I have several New Model Blackhawks, in several calibers including .357, and I just got a pair of 50th Anniversary Flattops that I gave my wife to use for cowboy shooting. Comparing the size and weight, they are very close, with the NMBH being slightly larger, both in frame size and grip frame size, than the Flattop, and 1 or 2 oz. heavier. I have large hands, and the grips of the Flattop are a little small for me. I am used to the NMBH and I like it. Grips are such a personal thing, you may feel more comfortable in your final selection if you can compare both.

I personaly Like the New models better.

I also prefer stainless as I'm no where near as particular about babying my revolvers as I am my rifles, so my revolvers tend to get used harder. A stainless Blackhawk will serve you a life time, and take abuse that'd destroy a lot of other guns.

My 357 Blackhawk started out as a 6.5" model, but I had it cut back to 5.5". I like 5.5" barrels on Ruger revolvers better because they look better, and seem to balance better for me.

As far as deer hunting with your 357 revolver, just find a good stout 158g SP load, and you'll have an honest 60+ yard deer combo that'll put'em down as well as anything else with good shot placement.

Thanks guys, that's helpful. I think I'll go with the 4 5/8" New model and maybe throw a Hogue grip on it. I have a feeling that I'm going to like it well enough to follow it with a 4 5/8" SBH in 44 Magnum.

I checked out the 50th anniversary Model also. I liked the all steel grip frame and the balance of this version.

I decided to go with a longer barrel stainless model since it is all steel as well. Then I found this blued 6.5" Blackhawk 357 and decided to go with it since it was saving me over a $100 over the stainless model that I was going to buy. I'll eventually replace the aluminum frame with the steel Super Blackhawk grip frame.

Well I went to the gun show this weekend and I couldn't pass up a deal on a new New Model Super Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel in stainless. I guess I'll have to get the .357 Blackhawk later.

I really like this revolver though, and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to get a single-action. I've already put a Hogue Monogrip on it so it fits my hand much better than the stock grips since I've got a pretty large paw. I've also ordered a Wolff spring kit for it. Is there anything else I should do to help break it in? I'd like to put a V-notch rear blade in but I can't find a pin-in front blade with a white dot. My old eyes really like that sight combo.

I can't wait to get it to the range and try it out.

Picked up the 50 yr 357 about 2 weeks ago..got 400 rounds through her already..its a very sweet shooting gun..cant wait to see the .44 50 yr. that their advertising now..probly gonna be awhile..the smaller frame..square notch rear sight..heavy for caliber..makes for a very quick handling yet precise lil revolver..thought id like a v-notch rear better but the overall balance puts me on target very fast. was planning on a .44 sbh this christmas..but oh well..now im saving my pennies for the 50 yr. .44

Last night I dreamed that my kids came to me and said, "Dad, you've done enough for us already. We don't want you to help with college any longer. It's time you had more Ruger single actions."

Then I woke up. Oh well, back to budgeting for the next one...

If you like the V notch and gold dot set up have your local Gunsmith cut a small notch in the front for the gold dot part to fit like the Redhawk.Had a Smith do a blawhawk 41 for me and it turned out great! I sold it.Now I have another 1.May have to do that agin myself. :-D

That's a good idea. I thought about taking the Dremmel with a cutting blade and cutting a notch myself, then drilling a shallow hole in the vertical face and filling it with white paint or nail polish. Don't know if I'm that ambitious just yet though.
