Bogmaster got a Beaverin' question

The Feds have a piece of property that has a "beaver problem".They asked me to come in and trap their problem.They have lost lots of trees they planted.My options are to go get them under the ice or wait until spring.If I go after them through the ice will baited 220's work?I figure they're as prime as they'll ever get now versus bite up in the spring.If I take this project on it will be a real good opportunity to do some education about snaring.It's a Wildlife refuge and they didn't submit a plan for trapping so nobody could get a permit.No one has trapped it for years because of all the additional restrictions they impose.If I say no then they have to use the EPHIS trapper,he only shoots coyotes from the plane or helicopter.Beside I've seen Bogmasters Demos :grin: Signed sleepless in Montana

Coy,I have used baited 330s under the ice,but am afraid you would nose snap and educate to many with 220s.Baited snare poles would be a much better alternative.You may also find ,that your under ice expedition ,may be less cost effective . I like to wait till the ice starts pulling away from shore in the spring.I then hit it hard with 330s and castor mounds.By starting right at ice out,I usually have a week to 10 days of very good beaver,with little biting.
 A spring line,is also more cost efficient,you can take a very large number of beavers,in a very short time.By waiting,you can also start working out and build yourself up.Because a large beaver line is going to tax your body a lot more then chasing those walking flea busses. :lol:  :lol:  :lol:
 It will also give you time to get a skinner lined up----there ain't no 1 minute beaver peeling---warm or cold. :-)  :-)  :-)

Thanks Tom.I'll wait until spring.If the Feds don't like they can call the Ephis trapper in.The secret to catching lots of coyotes is to check traps from the front seat of the truck.Drive by and get out only if there's a catch.You mean you can't check beaver sets from the front seat?
