NEW BOOK: Black Powder, Pig Lead and Steel Silhouettes
« on: March 11, 2003, 04:40:50 AM »
Gents and Madams,

Latest book in the inventory is "Black Powder, Pig Lead and Steel Silhouettes", by Paul A. Matthews.  Wolfe Publishing Company, Prescott, AZ, 800-899-7810.

The well written Preface to this book is ever reminding of old pharts taking up new hobbies.

Some of the Chapters:

Crossticks, Bullet Observations, Barrels and Chambers, Primer Wads, Powder Compression, Neck Tensiion, Barrel Seasoning, Making bullet lube and lube moulds, tapered bullets and throats.

Like most the first book in the inventory was SPG Reloading Primer.  Many years later Croft Barker's 'THE BLACK POWDER CARTRIDGE SILHOUETTE HANDBOOK", then Mike Venturino's "'SHOOTING BUFFALO RIFLES of the OLD WEST".  Obviously Paul Matthews many other books on the .45-70 are also interesting reads.

Coupled with "The Black Powder Cartridge News", "Single Shot Exchange", "Single Shot Rifle Journal" and "Shoot" magazine a serious library of reference materials is readily available to those that are so inclined.

Failing to mention "Introduction to Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Loading", by Chuck Raithel (Coydog) would be a disparity.

It's not difficult to enlighten one's self with many year's of experience by others involved in this ever so interesting and obsessive hobby of BPCR shooting and cartridge reloading.

The seven (last count) websites dedicated to BPCR are also chock full of opinions, ideas, experiences and personalities.

Perhaps this list of publications and references can be supplemented?

Car Knocker, the sites I can think of are (1) Shooterstalk, (2) the Shiloh Rifle forum, (3) this site, (4) the MSN site, (5) the Yahoo Groups site, (6) either HuntAmerica or 24hourCampfire - I can't remember now which one has a BP cartridge forum, and.....I can't think of a 7th site.

So Windcutter, what do you think of Matthews' book?  I just got it, and haven't finished reading it, but I'd like to hear your thoughts especially on Chapter 4, where Mathews does not believe in shooting groups without adjusting the sights as necessary in the middle of the group.   Also, what about his description of primer wads, especially his description of why he believes they are useful (Chapter 7)?  And also his ideas on powder compression in Chapter 8?

Howdy Cooper
The man knows what he is talking about, Paul Matthews that is.
I met him and shot in the same matches with him at Ridgeway Pa. in fact i
was there the day he shot 59 pigs on a long run,it held the the world record
for several years.
At 73 years old that ain't bad.
I have 3 of his books and read many articles in the Single Shot Exchange.
So i guess i'll have to get on the horn and order his newest one.
