case and bullet problem
« on: March 11, 2003, 06:55:35 AM »
Is there a special chamfer tool for the .17 the one I'm using just don't work . it's for .17 to 45 cal.    Can not get bullet to sit on case so I can get into seating die.   Using Hornady series 111 dies.   thanks ken or hoot

case and bullet problem

Hoot, the chamfering tool is mainly to remove burrs and rough spots left from the cutter when cases are trimmed. If your cases have a smooth, angled shape just at the mouth then it is most likely working. I have never worked with a .17 before but have found with smaller calibers when not using a boat tail bullet I can not easily get the lighter bullets to set on top of the case, remember the case neck is sized down just a few thousands smaller than the bullet in order for the cartrige to grip the bullet when it is seated. Try using your fingers to hold the bullet over the mouth until it starts into the die and feel for the bullet to strart seating, if it takes exsesive force and kinda pops into the case then it could be the chamfering tool. Hope this helps.

.17 case and bullet set up

Will give it another try.  Also is the case in shell holder suppose to allow movement or is it suppose to be tight.  using lee shell holder #4 for the .17 . I did get one to enter die right but screwed the next two up. It just seems that the tool I have will take to much off and not give me a little shelf to work with also make it look like a cookie cutter.  Clumsey fingers don't help either Ken or hoot

watch them fingers!! that case edge can and will act like a cookie cutter and snip a tiny chunk from your finger. I tried to use large tweezers to hold that little 17 cal. bullet over the case .More trouble than it was worth.
It ALMOST made me want to use factory ammo!    jh

Well, I just finished 19. have 20 done Bullet going in case ok   Thanks again, was on the right track just didn't know what I was doing.Started at 23 grains Varget with 25 gr. Hornady  hp. Should have started at around 22 grains powder.  Well it isn't too late will just do it and be safe. 22.4 start 10 shells at each step 22.7 than 23., 23.3 at next than 23.6 will slow down after that. .1 grain til 24 . Or should I go slower. At 24 will stop loading til I can try them out. Heading north next week.

Assuming that your .17 is a .17 Remington, then Varget From 22.0 grains to 24.5 grains with Remington 7-1/2 primer, is what I found as a useful range.  However, I found that IMR-3031 From 19.0 grains to 22.5 grains and Remington 7-1/2 primer was a little better...
